Kuyt: Dutch egos not to blame

Our man in Ukraine, Tom Adams, spoke to Dirk Kuyt about Netherlands' precarious position in Group B following a 2-1 loss to Germany.

Losing 2-1 to Germany leaves you in a difficult position in the group. Do you and the team still have the belief that you can get through?

Yes, obviously it is very disappointing that we lost our second game, again. No points from two games, so the mood in the dressing room wasn’t the best, but we are still alive.

We still have a very small chance to get through to the next round and the only thing I can say is that we still believe that we are a good team and we have to play an excellent game against Portugal with hopefully a lot of goals and a clean sheet and hopefully our neighbours [Germany] will do the job [against Denmark].

You say the mood wasn’t the best; what was it like at half-time?

I don’t have to explain that. If you are 2-0 down at half-time against Germany I don’t think I have to explain that. I think the way we came out of the dressing room... we made two substitutions and we tried everything to change the game.

It was a very open game but we scored one and with a little bit of luck we could have scored another.

Germany have a lot of players from one club in Bayern Munich. Do you think there is a case to be made that they played more naturally as a team?

I don’t think we have to look for that excuse because this team has been playing together for maybe six years with each other with maybe a couple of new young lads so we don’t have excuses.

They won so probably they deserved to win today and we have to get together, focus on our next game and make sure we win it so we can’t blame ourselves at the end of the day.

Wesley Sneijder said before the game that there were issues with “egos” in the Dutch camp. Is that an issue you recognise?

You always have egos in a team. I think Germany has the same problem and Spain has the same problem. You have many good players but I think today on the pitch there was a team trying to win the game.

Once again I don’t like to look for excuses. We lost the game, and we have to recover from that and look forward.

Are you confident you can all pull together for the final game and give it one last effort?

Yes, this team has the experience to win the last game and like I said if we win our last game we will have done everything we could and hopefully that will be enough.
