Biaggi now holds a 30.5 points lead at the top of the overall standings going into the final week after his two main rivals Tom Sykes and Marco Melandri suffered misfortune.

Sykes, who won the first race of the day, was forced to retire with technical issues while Melandri did not even start the race after hurting himself in the opening race.

Biaggi will now be the roasting hot favourite to claim his second World Superbike title when the riders compete in Magny-Cours in two weeks time.

Biaggi's Aprilia team-mate Laverty won the race as he held off a strong final lap from Jonathan Rea.

Sylvain Guintoli was able to finish fourth behind Biaggi after a final lap retirement from Leon Camier.

Chaz Davies also experienced some bad luck as he was forced to retire while in second when he crashed on lap four.
