Crewe fear that Ajay Leitch-Smith has sustained ligament damage following a robust challenge

Crewe boss Steve Davis fears Ajay Leitch-Smith could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after the striker suffered suspected ankle ligament damage in the weekend defeat at Portsmouth.

Leitch-Smith left Fratton Park on crutches having been on the receiving end of a robust challenge from Pompey midfielder Brian Howard.

The 22-year-old has swelling on both sides of his ankle and Alex's medical team will allow that to subside before making a full assessment of the damage.

"Howard went through Ajay to get the ball if you like and was deservedly booked for the challenge, but Ajay has come off worse," Davis told his club's official website.

"We fear he has suffered some ligament damage there and are preparing for him to be out for a little while with that.

"We will have to wait and see on how severe it is, but it doesn't look good."
