Los Che are in a period of financial uncertainty with increasing pressure from Bankia on a €380m debt and a particular €86m segment of that owed by the club’s majority shareholders Fundacio VCF.

With his contract expiring in June 2014 and no new deal signed yet, speculation is that the French full-back could be sold this summer to raise funds, and it is something he is open to.

“I’m happy here but if there is a significant offer from a top club and I can help Valencia make money then we would talk,” offered Mathieu to reporters today.

“My future? [Sporting director] Braulio [Vazquez] has spoken to me and I know that Valencia want to renew for two more years. I’m happy here but for now the contract issue is only small.

“My focus is not on me, or the Coach’s future…for me there is no issue because at the moment there are other more important things.”

Those include Los Che’s push for Champions League qualification, which was hit at the weekend with defeat to Real Sociedad, leaving them five points behind the fourth-placed Basques.

“In our games we have lacked some concentration. Teams are always looking to counter-attack against us so we need to look at it, because it has done us a lot of damage.”
