Aleveque, a renowned satirical comic and actor in France, insulted the legendary former France midfielder in an interview with SportMag in January 2011.

“This chap is an advertising billboard with three neurons,” Aleveque said at the time. “The manner in which he profits from his image is a disgrace.

“It is prostitution. This man is a whore; he is bald and dumb, like a penis.”

The judge decided that the terms “dumb like a penis” and “whore” constituted slander and required the payment of 5,000 euros in damages.

Aleveque was also ordered to pay the same amount again in costs.

Zidane’s lawyer, Carlo Alberto Brusa, said he was “very pleased with the decision, which was just and fair because what he said was unacceptable.

“There are limits to humour.”

Aleveque’s lawyer, Thomas Klotz, said he was “upset” with what he called a “very severe” ruling.

“We thought that the right to humour would be recognised,” he said.

“My client did not exceed the limits of freedom of expression, and had no intention to cause harm.”

Zidane retired from playing after the 2006 World Cup final, during which he was sent off for headbutting Italy's Marco Materazzi.

In an illustrious playing career, he turned out for Cannes, Bordeaux, Juventus and Real Madrid, winning domestic and continental titles with his clubs, and the World Cup and European Championships with France.

Since retiring he has mostly performed commercial and ambassadorial activities related to football, although he is a special adviser to Real Madrid and said he would eventually return to football in a coaching capacity.
