Marat Gafurov Scores Quickfire Submission Over Rob Lisita at ONE FC: Roar of Tigers

Marat Gafurov signed for ONE FC with a perfect professional record. He extended his winning streak to ten with an impressive first-round submission win over Australia’s Rob Lisita at Stadum Putra in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

The two featherweights went head to head in the main event of “ONE FC: Roar of Tigers,” but Gafurov, who holds a BJJ black belt and is better known for his ground game, was able to strike the decisive blow early in the opening round when he timed a punch from Lisita to land a kick flush to the jaw of the Australian.

Lisita took the full force of the Russian’s shin in his face and was knocked to the ground. Gafruov capitalized ruthlessly by diving on his back, sinking in both hooks and flattening him out face down on the ground to force the tap just 1:08 into the fight.

The win takes Gafurov to 10-0 and makes him a contender for an immediate shot at Jadamba Naruntungalag’s 145-pound title, although Eric Kelly is likely to get a shot at the Mongolian first. Lisita drops to 14-7 after a second successive submission loss.

The nine-fight card provided nine finishes and one of the most dramatic came in the co-main event when Peter Davis left it very late in the opening round to finish fellow lightweight Vaughn Donayre with a vicious barrage of ground and pound.

Davis appeared to have paid the price for overcommitting to a guillotine attempt when Donayre ended up on top, but when the Filipino postured up the Malaysian punished him with upkicks and then executed a textbook ankle sweep, landing in mount, where he went to work with a barrage of elbows.

It seemed like Donayre would be saved by the bell, but Davis was relentless with his onslaught and the referee stepped in with just 10 seconds left in the round. The Malaysian improves to 9-3 with a record sixth stoppage win inside the ONE FC cage, while the Filipino drops to 7-3.

It was also a good night for New Zealand based Malaysian Ev Ting, who looked desperate to secure a takedown against Edward Kelly, but was continually frustrated in his attempts to do so by the Filipino’s ability to sprawl and stay on his feet.

When they separated, it was Ting who seemed to have the superior striking, a point which was proven emphatically when he landed a head kick that dropped Kelly like a stone with the finish coming at 4:28 of round two.

It was a second-successive stoppage win for Ting inside the ONE FC cage. He improved to 8-2 and moved another notch up the featherweight rankings, while Kelly is moving in the opposite direction, as he drops to 5-2 on the back of consecutive losses.

One of the most remarkable results of the evening was a second-round submission win for former Lumpinee champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke. His striking prowess is always impressive, but the Thai flyweight showcased an impressive ground game to finish Saifu Merican with an opportunistic armbar.

Saiful was coming off three straight submission wins, but Dejdamrong mounted him in the second round and after some ground and pound rolled for an armbar, which brought the tap at the 2:12 mark. The victory moved him up to 3-0, while the Malaysian dropped to 3-2.

The other big winners were Bashir Ahmad (3-1), who put in a composed performance to submit former training partner Tanaphong Khunhankaew (5-4) in the opening round of their featherweight fight, and Ann Osman (2-1), who finished Aya Saeid Saber (2-5) with first-round ground and pound.
