Mark Hunt Escapes Serious Injury After Stipe Miocic Thrashing

Having undergone four-and-a-half rounds of punishment in the UFC Fight Night 65 main event over the weekend, heavyweight Mark Hunt escaped the brutal beating with no major injuries.

While many criticized everyone from the referee to Hunt’s cornermen for not stopping the fight much earlier than midway through the fifth round, when the referee eventually halted it, Hunt’s manager said his client suffered no significant repercussions from the fight.

“No major injuries, just swollen and a few nicks and he is in good spirits. Just another day in the office,” John McRae told the New Zealand Herald. “He’s just spending the time with family, friends and colleagues today.”

Even though UFC exec Tom Wright even said that the fight probably could have been stopped sooner, McRae was unfazed by the punishment Hunt took over the course of 22 minutes and 47 seconds in the cage.

“Mark knows his own limits and he wasn’t ready to give up,” McRae added.

Hunt is a remarkable rebound story, having once been shunned by the UFC brass to the point that they tried to pay him not to fight when they acquired his contract as part of the purchase of Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships.

He refused the offer, lost his first fight in the Octagon, and then went on a four-fight winning streak. He eventually faced Fabricio Werdum for the interim UFC heavyweight championship at UFC 180 last year. He lost that bout, returning at UFC Fight Night 65.

Hunt is now 1-3-1 in his last five fights, however, culminating in the lopsided loss to Stipe Miocic in Adelaide, Australia, over the weekend, but he still has three fights left on his current contract. And with the bullheadedness that carried him midway through the fifth round with Miocic, don’t expect Hunt to walk away anytime soon.
