Matthews' Olympic Torch dream

Even though her mind is still firmly set on sealing a place at London 2012, Sasha Matthews admits the chance to carry the Olympic Torch would be the perfect consolation prize should the unthinkable occur.

The 21-year-old ended a frustrating fifth in the 200m freestyle at the British Swimming Championships, acting as the London 2012 trials, at the Olympic Aquatics Centre back in March.

And, with only the top four guaranteed a spot on the 4x200m relay team, Matthews must now wait until next month and the second trials in Sheffield before she can be sure of taking part in a home Olympics.

But far from being down in the dumps Matthews has now adapted her training schedule and will go into the June last chance saloon confident of sealing her spot.

"The trials in March were a bit of a disappointment," she said. "I felt really good going into them, my form and fitness was good.

"But in the final I didn't produce my best so now I have to hold on that little bit longer before I can be sure of my place at the Games.

"My coach and I have sat down and made a few tweaks to my training schedule so that now I am hopefully going to be peaking at just the right time.

"The Olympics are just a fantastic opportunity and with four of the six relay spots now gone I will need to work as hard as I can to make sure I grab one of the final two."

In the same month as her initial Olympic disappointment, March, Matthews was announced as one of lucky few who will get to carry the London 2012 Torch as it tours the country ahead of the Games.

And Matthews admits that she cannot wait to grab her own slice of history when the Flame comes through Nottingham on June 29.

"Obviously my main hope is to be at the Games as a competitor but the chance to carry the Torch is an incredible opportunity," she added.

"If I can carry the Torch having secured my place on the British team then it would make for an amazing day to celebrate and really get into the Olympic spirit.

"But if haven't made the team I imagine it will be a little bit tougher to get excited. But having said that it's still a once in a lifetime opportunity that not very many other people will get so I'm really excited."
