On-loan Blackpool forward Callum McManaman is set to return to parent club Wigan in January.

McManaman opened his Seasiders account with the only goal in Saturday's win over Reading and has impressed during a nine-game spell at Bloomfield Road.

However, after Liverpool recalled Jonjo Shelvey from his stint in tangerine last week, boss Ian Holloway has been dealt a further blow after Wigan counterpart Roberto Martinez stated any extension to McManaman's loan was not on the table.

"It's been great to see Callum enjoying his football and growing while at Blackpool," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post. "It was important for him to get regular minutes under his belt, and we've all been admiring his progress from a distance."

Martinez added: "He'll be returning to our club as a more mature and confident player, ready to fight for his place in the first team. And we're all looking forward to seeing him back here in the first week of January."

Games against Watford, Southampton, Barnsley and Birmingham will complete McManaman's brief stay in the Championship, and he told the Blackpool Gazette: "I've loved every minute of my time at the club. I just hope to spend as much time on the pitch as possible between now and when I go back."
