Nixed UFC on Fox 8 Fight Between Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione Rescheduled for UFC 165

A heavyweight bout between Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione has been rescheduled for UFC 165 on Sept. 21 in Toronto, according to a report from the Phoenix Star. UFC officials later confirmed the move.

The two were originally slated to meet at next week’s UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle, but Mitrione suffered an injury. Instead of finding a new opponent for Schaub, UFC officials opted to keep the bout intact and push it back a couple of months.

Schaub and Mitrione each made his way to the Octagon via The Ultimate Fighter 10: The Heavyweights, but both being members of Team Evans on the reality show, they never fought each other.

Mitrione (6-2) won his most recent bout, defeating Phil DeFries in just 19 seconds at UFC on Fuel TV 9. The victory ended a two-fight skid for the former NFL player. He has only ever fought under the UFC banner during his professional MMA career.

Mitrione quickly landed in hot water following the victory. He was handed a fine and suspension for breach of contract when he went on a rant about transgender fighter Fallon Fox during an online radio show.

He’ll square up with Schaub (9-3), also a former NFL player.

Like Mitrione, Schaub recently bounced back from back-to-back losses. He won a dominant three-round unanimous decision victory over Lavar Johnson at UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche on Feb. 23 in Anaheim, Calif.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his belt on the line against Alexander Gustafsson in the UFC 165 main event. Jones will be gunning for sole possession of the UFC records for most consecutive and most successful light heavyweight title defenses.
