Motherwell suffered a worrying start to their Champions League preparations with a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Second Division Ayr.

Stuart McCall, who has been unable to add to his squad this summer amid the financial uncertainty caused by the collapse of Rangers, was without the injured Shaun Hutchinson and Bob McHugh and saw his side lose two goals in either half at Somerset Park.

Elsewhere, around 11,000 fans watched Dundee United beat Dundee 3-0 at Dens Park thanks to Jon Daly's hat-trick.

St Johnstone completed their preparations for Thursday's Europa League second qualifying-round clash against Eskisehirspor in Turkey with a 2-1 victory over Partick Thistle.

John McGlynn enjoyed a 3-0 victory over former club Raith Rovers in his first match as Hearts manager, thanks to goals from young full-back Callum Paterson, John Sutton and David Templeton, who curled one home from 20 yards.

Tim Clancy marked his first appearance for Hibernian with an impressive goal in a 2-0 victory over East Fife in Methil. The former Motherwell defender curled home a second-half free-kick after Ivan Sproule's early opener.

Kilmarnock threw away a two-goal half-time lead as they lost 3-2 to Livingston at Grangemouth Stadium.

Meanwhile, Aberdeen kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 5-1 victory at Arbroath.

Ross County continued preparations for their SPL debut with a 3-0 victory against Clach in Inverness.

Inverness won 1-0 at Elgin thanks to a second-half goal from Nick Ross while Dunfermline's match against Berwick was cancelled because of a waterlogged pitch at Shielfield Park.
