The 22-year-old joined United in 2010 for £7.4 million from Vitoria de Guimaraes with boss Ferguson saying Bebe was the only player he had ever signed without seeing him play.
The Portuguese youngster's lacklustre displays at first-team level saw him loaned out to Besiktas for the 2011/12 season, where he struggled with injuries.
He is currently playing in his native land for Rio Ave, again on loan from United, and he opened up to local website Maisfutebol about life in Manchester.
"I never took Manchester United seriously and never understood a word about what Alex Ferguson was saying," he conceded.
"I thought, 'I’m here, I’m doing well and I don’t have to try hard every day. It was my fault. I was messing around too much'.
"I went into the room and saw that (Ferguson) was looking for me, very concentrated. He told me to cut my hair, it will look better. So I cut it the same day. In the next training session, he didn’t recognise me. I went past him many times and he didn’t know me.
"He didn’t speak much but I didn’t understand much. He has a difficult accent, so I understood nothing.
"'He called me 'Baby'. After, I told him it wasn’t pronounced like that."
Bebe also said that he nutmegged Ryan Giggs in training once and got a funny response from the Welshman as a result.
"One day I passed the ball through Ryan Giggs's legs and he told me, 'Go on, go tell your mother you did this to Ryan Giggs'," he said.
Bebe also said he would be open to returning to Manchester United, but only if he got a place in the team.
"I want to go back and everything indicates I will. But if I don’t play, I would prefer to go to another team. I want to continue to develop," he said.
"I speak regularly with coaches. They want to know how I am doing. This motivates me and gives me hope."
