The England midfielder is still considered about five weeks away from full fitness but his rehabilitation has been speedier than expected.
Carrick played in United's 1-0 win over Arsenal a week and a half ago but withdrew from the England squad for the friendly defeats against Chile and Germany.
The midfielder has appeared in 15 of United's 18 matches this season and his absence leaves manager David Moyes short in central midfield - an area which he tried to strengthen in the summer.
The 32-year-old is expected to be available for selection for the busy festive period of games starting with the Boxing Day clash against Hull City.
