Cardiff took a shock lead after only 10 minutes after a calamitous error from David Luiz, who let Ramires’s back-pass run straight into Jordon Mutch’s path before the midfielder calmly chipped over Petr Cech.
But an even worse lapse of concentration from Cardiff keeper David Marshall saw Samuel Eto’o nick the ball off him before setting up Eden Hazard for the equaliser - though there was some doubt whether Eto'o's move was legal.
Eto’o then scored his first for the club after some nimble footwork and a clinical finish before substitute Oscar and a second from Hazard completed the job.
Mourinho had to watch his side score the final two goals from the stands as he received his marching orders from referee Anthony Taylor after raging at the official. But it mattered little as Chelsea turned on the style for a win that sees them stay third in the table.
PRE-MATCH: Petr Cech makes his 300th Chelsea appearance. Ryan Bertrand and Willian make their first Premier League starts of the season.
8’ – CHANCE: Eto’o crosses straight into Juan Mata’s path and he should bury it from six yards out and last season the net would have been bulging. This time he catches only air and Cardiff escape.
10’ - GOAL Chelsea 0-1 Cardiff City: It’s a calamity from David Luiz who leaves Ramires’s pass-back and lets the ball run straight into the path of Jordon Mutch who lifts the ball over Cech.
17’ – CHANCE: John Terry clips the outside of the post from Juan Mata’s corner
33’ - GOAL Chelsea 1-1 Cardiff City: It’s another calamitous moment, this time from Marshall who does not see Eto’o behind him whilst bouncing the ball. The Chelsea striker nips the ball off him and although Medel recovers to keep his first effort out, he squares the ball to Hazard to slot home.
66’ – GOAL Chelsea 2-1 Cardiff City: Eto’o rolls back the years by cutting inside Steven Caulker before rifling past David Marshall.
69’ – YELLOW CARDS: Jose Mourinho sent to the stands for ranting at referee Anthony Taylor.
78’ – GOAL Chelsea 3-1 Cardiff City: Oscar charges forward and shoots into the top of the net over the head of David Marshall.
81’ – GOAL Chelsea 4-1 Cardiff City: Eden Hazard scores his second as his shot squirms under David Marshall’s body.
Cardiff’s defeat means they have lost four of their last five matches. Chelsea have now won 11 and drawn one of their last 12 games at Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho has never lost in 64 league games at Stamford Bridge.
Both of Mutch’s Premier League goals have come in London SW6 – he scored his first at Fulham on September 28.
TALKING POINT: Two mistakes. Howlers from the two Davids, Luiz and Marshall, who will have to sharpen up their concentration. And Mourinho may have to curb his temper after being sent to the stands.
