Manchester City's David Silva (L) celebrates scoring against Newcastle United

Manchester City got the Manuel Pellegrini era off to a flyer with a resounding 4-0 win over 10-man Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and substitute Samir Nasri did the damage as the Citizens surged to the top of the table.

The hosts dominated throughout and could have added to their margin of victory with Edin Dzeko, Javi Garcia and Gael Clichy all going close.

The result compounded a miserable night for Newcastle, who saw their pre-match preparations overshadowed by Arsenal's bid for their influential midfielder, Yohan Cabaye.

The Magpies rarely threatened and saw their hopes evaporate on the stroke of half time when Steven Taylor was shown a straight red card for catching Aguero with a flailing arm.

It was almost a perfect night for City, but an injury scare to captain Vincent Kompany will leave them anxious, after the influential Belgium international limped off late on.

KEY MOMENTS

PRE-MATCH: Navas and Fernandinho start, Cabaye absent - New City boss Manuel Pellegrini opted to hand debuts to Jesus Navas and Fernandinho with Alvaro Negredo on the bench. Sergio Aguero also returned following an injury-plagued pre-season. Newcastle's pre-match preparations were sent into turmoil after news of Arsenal's bid for Yohan Cabaye saw the midfielder left out of the side.

6' GOAL: Man City 1-0 Newcastle - David Silva gives City a dream start! The Spaniard plays in Dzeko down the left and then follows in to head home after the forward's cross was deflected into his path.

22' GOAL: Man City 2-0 Newcastle - Aguero scores a great goal. Dzeko back heels the ball into the Argentine's path and he does the rest, racing at Taylor before fizzing a low 20-yarder into the bottom corner.

45' RED CARD - Newcastle go down to 10 men. Taylor feels the full wrath of the ref for lashing out at Aguero with the ball in the air.

51' GOAL: Man City 3-0 Newcastle - Yaya Toure curls a sublime free-kick into the top corner to all-but wrap up the three points. A great way for Yaya to mark his 100th PL appearance.

70' INJURY: Kompany is forced to hand over the captain's armband as he goes off injured. City will hope it's not too serious with Matija Nastasic already out.

75' GOAL: Man City 4-0 Newcastle - Nasri gets in on the goal action as he races onto Zabaleta's attempted pass to Dzeko and coolly slips it beyond Krul.

TALKING POINT: Manchester City enjoyed a comfortable victory in Manuel Pellegrini's first competitive match in charge. But the major talking point of the night centred around Yohan Cabaye and Arsenal's bid to try and sign the player on the eve of Newcastle's first game of the season. Manager Alan Pardew was clearly incensed by the timing of the bid in his pre-match interview and it no doubt hampered his team's preparations for what was already a tough task.
