David Moyes made a successful start to his Manchester United career as a pair of Robin van Persie goals gave the Premier League champions a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic at Wembley.

While it was technically Moyes's first trophy as United manager, celebrations remained low key after a routine victory over FA Cup winners Wigan, who have already begun their league campaign following relegation last season.

United went in front on six minutes when Van Persie headed in to complete a slick move, and last season's top scorer gave a further reminder of his top dog status at Old Trafford with a deflected second just before the hour mark.

Moyes's side maintained almost complete control throughout, but the appearance of 39-year-old Ryan Giggs in the starting line-up highlighted the Scot's failure to reinforce his squad with a midfielder following his failed pursuit of Cesc Fabregas.

Wayne Rooney, whose future with the club remains in the balance, missed the game due to a shoulder injury but is expected to join the England squad ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Scotland.

PRE-MATCH: Giggs starts, Rooney out - Moyes's first United teamsheet features 39-year-old Ryan Giggs and 20-year-old debutant Wilfried Zaha. As expected, there is no place for Wayne Rooney whom the club say has a shoulder injury.

6' - GOAL: Manchester United 1-0 Wigan - Van Persie starts and finishes a fine move, playing the ball wide to Patrice Evra on the left, then dashing into the box to power a header past Scott Carson from Evra's cross.

17' - INJURY: Rafael off - Rafael rolls his ankle and goes off in obvious pain. Worrying for United. Chris Smalling replaces him.

59' - GOAL: Manchester United 2-0 Wigan - Van Persie doubles United's advantage with a lucky finish from the edge of the box. The Dutchman's shot takes a big deflection off James Perch, wrong-footing Carson who can do nothing to stop the ball looping into the net.

TALKING POINT: Is it really a trophy? This was Moyes's second career 'trophy' having previously won the third tier with Preston North End. But United fans see the Community Shield as little more than a glorified friendly, and the manager's somewhat embarrassed look when he lifted the shield suggests he knows most supporters would rather have a decent central midfielder than another trinket in the trophy cabinet.

Robin van Persie has scored eight goals in his last six matches against Wigan Athletic.

McArthur, McCarthy, McClean, McCann and McManaman all featured for Wigan

Robin Van Persie (Manchester United): Two goals earn Van Persie - scorer of 30 goals in 48 games last season - the nod, but special mentions should be reserved for the trademark classiness of Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick at the heart of the United midfield.
