Gary Hooper was Norwich's match-winner at Watford

Crystal Palace succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Norwich City at Carrow Road thanks to a Gary Hooper goal.

On the half hour, Nathan Redmond drove inside from the right, laying the ball off to Johan Elmander. The Swedish striker pulled the ball to the back post for Wes Hoolahan, who slid the ball across goal for Hooper to slot past Julian Speroni.

Palace hit back almost immediately when Barry Bannan fired a shot towards the top corner, but Russell Martin headed it against the bar.

The second half was notable for the sheer lack of chances, with Palace going closest when Sebastien Bassong’s slide towards goal almost resulted in an own goal as he lifted Dean Moxey’s cross over the Norwich goal.

While Norwich sat ever deeper in the closing stages, they showed so little imagination that Tony Pulis deserved his first ever Palace game to end in defeat.

KEY EVENTS

9’ - ELMANDER HITS THE BAR: Redmond’s cross from the right is hooked against the bar by Elmander, and Leroy Fer can’t score with his follow-up header.

30’ - HOOPER SCORES: Wes Hoolahan wrong-foots the Palace defence, sending the ball back across goal for Hooper to break the deadlock.

32’ - BANNAN CHANCE: Jason Puncheon fires at goal from the right of the box, Ruddy palms the ball away and only Martin stops Bannan’s shot going in by heading it against the bar.

63’ - PALACE NEAR MISS: Moxey drives towards the byline, and his low cross is somehow lifted over the bar by Sebastien Bassong, just a few yards out.

83’ - KEBE VOLLEY: Jimmy Kebe volleys from the edge of the box, but Ruddy had it covered.

KEY STATS

This is Norwich’s first victory against Crystal Palace in six league matches.

This is Crystal Palace’s worst points tally (7) after 13 games of a Premier League season.

Crystal Palace have lost 18 of their last 19 Premier League away games.

Crystal Palace have not won in their last 39 Premier League matches where they have been behind at half-time (36 defeats), in a run stretching back to March 1995.

TALKING POINT: Can Pulis save Palace? The answer is almost certainly no, but Palace are so plainly out of their depth, and the transfer window is so far away, that Pulis will have to be an incredible manager to turn it around.
