Moyes was unable to clear up that Rooney's own intention was to stay at the club when repeatedly asked if he wanted to leave or not.

It took all of a couple of questions before journalists approached the subject of Rooney's future at the Scot's first press conference since he was appointed as the new manager at Old Trafford.

He provided assurances that the England star would be staying at United and repeated that he will remain at the club.

He said: "Wayne is not for sale. He is a Manchester United player and will remain a Manchester United player.

"I have had several meetings (with Rooney). He has been training very well. I have seen a glint in his eye and he looks happy."

Further questions were put to him, including one in which he was asked whether Rooney had categorically said he wanted to stay at Old Trafford.

"I can tell you categorically that Rooney is training fantastically," was Moyes' reply, but he refused to expand further.

Rooney's future has cast a huge shadow over the early stages of Moyes' tenure as he replaces Sir Alex Ferguson.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Paris Saint Germain have all been touted as suitors for the England striker but Moyes has categorically stated that the England striker will stay at Old Trafford.

Moyes gave a composed performance in his first press conference, revealing that Ferguson had told him of his retirement plans before confirming: "And you're the next manager."

He stated he would be grateful for his predecessor's help and counsel, and would try not to change as he takes the Old Trafford hotseat.

"All I can do is do what David Moyes has done before," he said. "I'll continue the traditions of the club."
