Rovers' owners take transfer tips via Facebook

Blackburn Rovers’ bungling owners have come under further scrutiny after it emerged that they had taken tips on new signings from interactions with fans on Facebook.

Vineeth Rao, who is a director at the club, corresponded with supporters on the social network, according to the Sporting Intelligence website, and not only discussed transfer policy with them, but even took their suggestions.

“Send me a mail … will look into them, and forward to scout,” Rao told one fan about some potential targets.

Rovers’ dealings did not pay off, however – the club were relegated from the Premier League in May after a torturous campaign in which a large number of fans lost faith in the owners and large-scale protests were aimed at them and manager Steve Kean.

But from Rao’s interactions with fans, it appears that Kean is on borrowed time at the club.

In July last year, he told another fan “When new management comes, there will be changes”, Sporting Intelligence added.

And Kean’s role in transfers was undermined in messages Rao is believed to have sent to fans.

In one instance, the director explained to a fan that Argentine striker Mariano Pavone would not be joining the club. Kean was interviewed after the emails were exchanged, still hopeful that he could add Pavone to his squad.

Sporting Intelligence reports further rumours of shambolic transfer strategy, with a some of their advisors and executives having little experience in football and Wikipedia being used as a scouting tool.

Kean’s loyalty to the owners has seen him remain in the Ewood Park despite presiding over relegation, though there is uncertainty over his future at the club.

The reports add to the sense of farce at the club, with claims that the Venky's group, who own Blackburn Rovers, did not understand the concept of relegation until their club had succumbed to it.

And their former deputy CEO Paul Hunt was sacked just a day after an email he sent advocated Kean's axing was leaked last month.
