Cassano departed the Genoa club after a fall-out with president Riccardo Garrone 18 months ago. He moved to Sampdoria from Real Madrid in 2007.

Cassano, 30 has wound up at Inter via AC Milan, and has hinted at a final fling with Sampdoria before he retires, but the club's vice-president Edoardo Garrone said: "A return to Sampdoria is possible for Cassano, but not as a player.

“Cassano has an incredible gift and that is that he sees football like few other people in the world. He has a great ability of understanding whether a player is good or not at whatever age.

“Perhaps in the future, once Cassano retires, he could collaborate with us in trying to find new footballing talents.”
