The competition in Finland marks the final period of this season’s World Cup, with this the third-last event.

And the plaudits went to Schmid whose cross-country time of 23:03.4 minutes was enough to bring home the gold after sitting 12th following the ski jump.

Germany’s Tino Edelmann was sitting second after the ski jump but he couldn’t improve to first, settling for silver after coming 21st in the cross-country.

And completing the medal winners was German Johannes Rydzek with bronze, his first podium finish of the season.

But these results did little to impact where the overall medals will go with current leader Jason Lamy Chappuis managing just 18th in Lahti.

And his lead over Akito Watabe has been cut to 164 points with just two events remaining after the Japanese skier finished eighth.

Norway’s Mikko Kokslien remains on course for a medal as he sits third on 901 points after coming ninth in Finland.
