The Serbia international met with Viola directors at their headquarters on Friday afternoon, but left without securing an extension to the deal that expires in June 2014.

President Andrea Della Valle noted on Thursday that he would be sold if there was no new contract and there was “not much chance” of him staying.

Milan have long been interested in Ljajic, even though their initial €9m offer was rejected, and remain the favourites.

It was reported Atletico Madrid made a proposal, but the forward turned down that alternative.

Over the last few hours Roma have emerged as new contenders for Ljajic’s signature, as he would be a valid replacement should Erik Lamela join Tottenham for €35m.

Other options are Spurs, Southampton and Schalke 04, though the player seems eager to remain in Serie A.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Ljajic will give Fiorentina his definitive answer on Tuesday morning after their Serie A match against Catania.

Cagliari President Massimo Cellino warned he will “not give any of our players to Napoli” after the Davide Astori problems.

The Sardinians had a deal to sell defender Astori to Napoli for €14m, but the move collapsed at the last minute when Rafa Benitez opted against the signing.

“I will not give Astori to Napoli, but nor to any of the other ‘good’ clubs,” snapped Cellino on SportItalia television.

“I have decided to keep all of my players this season. Napoli? There is one certainty – we will not give any of our players to Napoli.”

Lazio’s attempts to sign Burak Yilmaz from Galatasaray could include cash plus Libor Kozak or Marius Stankevicius.

The Biancocelesti are tracking the Swiss international striker, but have so far been unable to reach Galatasaray’s €15m asking price.

According to Calciomercato.it, Lazio could close the gap by including a player as part of the deal.

The combination would either be €12m plus Stankevicius or €5m plus Czech striker Kozak.

Kozak is only 24 years old and was a big hit in the Europa League last season, scoring 10 goals in 11 games.

He has also been linked with Udinese, Chievo and Sassuolo.

Another problem is represented by the terms of the financial transaction, as Galatasaray would prefer the money in bulk, whereas Lazio aim to pay in instalments over four years.
