The first frame of their second session gave no hint of the dominance that was to come with Murphy prevailing 66-39 after almost an hour’s play.

Murphy took the next two frames with a 95 break and then a 78 but Gould ground out the 13th 58-1 to go to the mid-session interval trailing by 8-5.

Murphy rattled off the next two frames 106-0 and 95-0 to secure his place in the next round.

At one point in the final frame he had potted eight reds with eight blacks but eventually ran out of position - however it was a measure of his supremacy as the match drew to a conclusion.

Murphy will face either Graeme Dott or Peter Ebdon in the next round, with their match to resume on Monday with Dott leading 6-2.

First session:

Murphy came from two frames down to lead Gould 5-4 at the close of the opening session of their first-round match at the Crucible.

In a to-and-fro session, Murphy finished with the slightest of advantages over Gould.

Gould took the first frame with a break of 72 as he ruthlessly punished some sloppy shot making from the former champion. Murphy continued in the same vein in the second frame and while Gould was less clinical he managed to go two frames to the good, 57-44.

Murphy ground out the next two frames though to manage to go to the mid-session interval level.

Having found some form, a break of 112 allowed Murphy to take the lead for the first time but Gould pegged him immediately back with a break of 63 to take the frame 81-4.

Murphy won the next two – registering a break of 88 to claim the eighth frame - to open up a two-frame advantage, but Gould managed to win a long-winded last frame 72-7 to stay in touch.
