Williams looked far above his world ranking of 18 as breaks of 50, 72, 69 and 100 saw him cause the shock of the tournament and set up a third round match with Aditya Mehta.

Fifth seed Stephen Maguire won a tight encounter 4-3 against Tom Ford to progress to round three of the Indian Open.

Maguire took the first frame with runs of 36 and 49 but Ford fought right back to take a scrappy second frame that saw Maguire construct the highest break – a 40 but still went down 71-52.

Maguire was first to the baize in the third frame but his 59 was not enough as Ford took the opportunity to make a 79 and take the advantage.

Runs of 42 and 18 saw Maguire take the fourth 60-52 but Fiord replied in kind to take the fifth courtesy of runs of 29 and 42 to secure the fifth 71-1.

But the Scot drew on his wealth of experience with a break of 93 to send the match into a decider that Maguire ground out 54-46 to progress to the next round.

Top seed Neil Robertson overcame England’s Rod Lawler 4-2 whilst John Higgins hammered China’s Li Yan 4-0.
