With the scores tied at 5-5, Ding edged ahead with a half-century in the decider only for O’Sullivan to respond with a 63 of his own as the Rocket completed a remarkable turnaround.
O’Sullivan will now face Neil Robertson in the semi-finals on Saturday.
Breaks of 53 and 66 helped Ding into a 3-0 lead but O’Sullivan hit back to take the next two frames.
The following four frames were shared to leave the score at 5-4 before O’Sullivan notched a 55 in the 10th to force a decider which the Englishman then took despite Ding building a healthy 50 point lead at one stage.
Both players had earlier sailed through the group stage with O’Sullivan thrashing Mark Davis 4-0 and Ding beating Barry Hawkins 4-2.
