Murphy, the sixth seed, is a former world and UK champion but he went down 5-1 to fellow Englishman Alex Davies, who is not seeded.

Top 16 players Matthew Stevens and Ali Carter booked their places in China though.

Welsh world number 14 Stevens won four frames in a row to defeat amateur Zak Surety while Carter, ranked two places lower, had breaks of 70 and 67 as he raced into a 4-0 lead against Elliot Slessor before eventually progressing 5-3.

World number one Mark Selby is the highest-profile casualty so far, with the Wuxi Classic the first ranking tournament to be played as a flat 128-man draw.

World champion Ronnie O'Sullivan withdrew earlier this week and world number five Stephen Maguire chose not to enter.

The last 64 line-up for the first ranking event of the season which starts on June 17 in China was finalised in the afternoon session.
