Assen WSBK: Giugliano tops second qualifying

The Italian started off well, but could not match the lap times of Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes, until two minutes before the chequered flag came down and the former European Superstock 1000 champ clocked a time of 1’36.814, resulting in Sykes being toppled off the top of the time-sheets and finishing the morning with a time of 1’36.883.

The Brit was the fastest out on track with thirty minutes remaining of the session, and looked unbeatable out on the Dutch circuit, but he had to contend with fast lap times from Giugliano, and Kawasaki Racing team-mate Loris Baz, who were all never really out of the top five, throughout the qualifying practice.

Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea improved on his performance from yesterday and with three minutes to go clawed his way to third, but was quickly overtaken by Baz, but finished fourth fastest with a time of 1’37.559.

GoldBet BMW riders Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri were on form once again around the dry Assen circuit, but it was the Italian who was less than a second faster than his Welsh team-mate, with Davies setting a time of 1’38.150, placing him safely inside the top ten, even if he did go in to the gravel halfway through the session.

Aprilia Racing’s Eugene Laverty started the morning with being the fastest bike out on track, but the race was then red flagged when Team Pedercini rider Alexander Lundh crashed ten minutes in, and had to be taken to the medical centre for treatment. The qualifying practice soon started up again but Laverty could not emulate his earlier form and finished ninth fastest with a time of 1’38.167.

Fixi Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier obviously found this morning’s qualifying practice a struggle with his knee injury, as he only managed to complete eleven laps and set a lap time of just over two minutes of, 2’01.728.
