The Australian had only just crept into the round with a late burst on the previous day, but could not outpoint Marco Fernandez and Mitch Crews.
There was a home surfer for fans to celebrate, however, as Owen Wright swept through in style.
“It was pretty tricky out there, I just had to try and concentrate on choosing the right waves and try and make sure I executed one or two big turns on each wave – We’re at the serious end of the event and it’s generally the more powerful performances that win through” Wright said.
The quarter-finals, semis, and final are all set to take place on Sunday.
