Smith watched on as Britain overturned a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in the Davis Cup for the first time in 83 years in their Europe/Africa Group I second-round clash in Coventry at the start of the month.

James Ward and Dan Evans were the heroes on the final day after London 2012 Olympian Colin Fleming and Wimbledon doubles champion Jonny Marray had made it 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena.

Britain were then drawn against Croatia for the World Group play-off in September with the tie to be played on clay in Umag, which hosts an ATP World Tour 250 event in July.

And Britain's Davis Cup captain Smith, who could have Olympic men's singles champion Andy Murray available for selection, is adamant his team will be up for the challenge.

He said: "We look forward to the challenge of an away tie on clay and will be ready for this all important match."
