After a shaky start on serve – which saw the pair trade three breaks in the opening set – the Spaniard settled to comfortably beat Young 6-7(5) 6-3 6-1 and set up a last eight meeting with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Elsewhere, American wildcard Jack Sock shocked second seed Tommy Haas 6-4 6-4 while John Isner fired down 21 aces en route to a 7-6(1) 3-6 6-2 win over Slovakian qualifier Lukas Lacko.
