James Wallace, Jake Cassidy and Danny Holmes were all on target for Ronnie Moore’s side, with Paddy Madden and Sam Foley’s efforts proving irrelevant with Joe Edwards sent off for the visitors.

The result sees Tranmere move seven points clear of second-placed Stevenage, who lost 1-0 to Colchester United with Sanchez Watt scoring the winner after Anthony Grant had been sent off.

Sheffield United could not make any ground on the leaders as Nick Blackman’s strike was cancelled out by substitute Matt Smith’s goal for Oldham at Bramall Lane.

Crawley Town beat Bury 3-2 to go fourth, with a brace from Nicky Adams and a goal from Hope Akpan proving enough at Broadfield Stadium. Tom Hopper and Andy Bishop scored for the visitors.

Notts County put four goals past Carlisle United to win 4-0 at Brunton Park to go fifth, with Swindon losing ground with a 2-0 home defeat to Coventry, courtesy of a David McGoldrick double.

Brentford shared a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe at Glanford Park, while Rob Jones rescued a point for Doncaster after Neil Austin’s opener for Hartlepool at Victoria Park.

Portsmouth secured a 2-0 victory over Crewe at Fratton Park thanks to Izale McLeod and Wes Thomas’s goals, while Bournemouth beat Leyton Orient 2-0 at Dean Court courtesy of strikes from Marc Pugh and Lewis Grabban.
