UFC 178 Gate and Attendance: Fighters Perform, but Numbers a Little Low
The Ultimate Fighting Championship was back home on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso.
The attendance for the night was one of the lowest marks for a UFC event at the MGM Grand in recent history, but accounted for 10,544 people in the arena, producing a gate of $2.2 million. UFC 173 earlier this year drew 11,036, but prior to that, most events at the MGM Grand drew audiences closer to 13,000-15,000.
In the night's main event, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson easily defended his belt by submitting Chris Cariaso in the second round.
Much of the focus, however, was on the supporting cast.
Donald Cerrone defeated former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez in the night's co-main event, while Conor McGregor, who reportedly drew Irish fans to Vegas to the tune of 10-percent of the total audience, quickly took out Dustin Poirier.
Cat Zingano and Dominick Cruz both returned victoriously after lengthy layoffs.
The promotion returns to the Grand Garden Arena on Jan. 3, 2015, for UFC 182, which is slated to feature Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier and Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano.
