UFC 179 Results: Neil Magny Ties UFC Victory Record with Patolino TKO

Neil Magny Beats Carlos Condit in One-Sided Decision (UFC 219 Results)

Neil Magny wasn’t only aiming for a victory at UFC 179 on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, he was also targeting a UFC record.

And he got it.

Magny used relentless pressure to eventually score the victory over William “Patolino” Macario to secure a record-tying fifth victory for 2013. The record for most modern-era UFC victories in a single year was previously held solely by Roger Huerta, but Magny’s win over Patolino put him on the same plane.

Magny started slow, but steadily ramped up the pressure as the fight progressed. Patolino showed an obvious power advantage with his striking, but couldn’t consistently find a home for his punches.

On the other hand, Magny kept increasing the pressure by moving forward with his jab until he could secure a takedown late in the second round and amass some damage before the horn.

He took Patolino down again in the final frame, but this time, he amped up the his striking output, unloading with punches until the referee had to pull him off of his opponent.

In addition to Patolino, Magny has also defeated Gasan Umalatov, Tim Means, Rodrigo de Lima, and Alex Garcia this year.

But he’s not satisfied with tying the record. In the lead-up to the fight, Magny said that, if victorious, he would like to fight again this year in an attempt to take sole possession of the most-victories-in-a-year record.

If he exits with a clean bill of health, and with two months and several events left in 2013, Magny may just be granted his wish.
