UFC 189 Results: Matt Brown Finishes Tim Means with First-Round Submission
Fifth-ranked welterweight Matt Brown rebounded from back-to-back losses and got back in the win column on Saturday with a first-round submission over Tim Means at UFC 189 in Las Vegas.
Means took the fight to Brown and hurt the Ohio native with a left hand early in the fight. Brown fired back and staggered Means.
Brown delivered a high kick that landed flush, but Means shook it off. Inside the clinch, the two traded elbow strikes. Means bloodied Brown, but Brown’s elbows hurt Means. “The Dirty Bird” quickly looked to get the fight to the ground. Brown applied a guillotine choke that forced Means to tap out with 16-seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Following the win, Brown stated that he hasn’t given up on his dream of being a UFC champion.

“I’m really happy. I had a really hard camp. Had the best camp of my life, though. Had the best training partners in my life; had the best coaches I could ever ask for,” he said. “Everything is coming together real quick, real good. I’m looking to be a champion still. I ain’t giving up. I ain’t going nowhere yet.”
Both fighters are known for their devastating elbows on the inside. Brown know that elbows were going to be a factor heading into the fight.
“I thought, I’m the best elbower in this division, actually in the UFC I have the best elbows. He came in to prove he had the best elbows. I knew we were going to have to battle it out with elbows. Fortunately I hurt him and made him make a mistake. He’s as tough as they come. I have a lot of respect for Tim Means for sure,” said Brown.
With the submission win, Brown set the record for most finishes in the UFC’s 170-pound division with twelve.
