UFC on Fox 8 Fighter Bonuses: Demetrious Johnson Takes Sub of the Night Honors

Demetrious Johnson defends his UFC title Saturday night (MMA Weekly)

Heading into UFC on Fox 8 on Saturday night in Seattle, the co-main event between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger stole the spotlight, but when it came time for the post-fight awards and bonuses, they were nowhere to be seen.

UFC president Dana White handed out $50,000 bonuses to the award winners, and while main eventer UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson was overshadowed in the lead-up, he walked away with the Submission of the Night bonus following an impressive five-round performance.

Johnson dominated John Moraga for the majority of their fight, but once Moraga landed a stunner in the fourth round, causing Johnson’s nose to bleed, that’s when the champion stepped it up a notch.

He quickly took Moraga to the mat in the final frame and diligently worked on him until he secured an armbar finish.

Melvin Guillard talked about the importance of his fight at UFC on Fox 8, characterizing it as a job-saving performance when he knocked Mac Danzig out midway through their bout. Not only was the fight “job saving,” but it was also enriching, as Guillard earned the $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.

The Fight of the Night honors went to Ed Herman and Trevor Smith, who fought on the FX televised prelim portion of the fight card.

Both men are heavy hitters, and both men were hitting heavy on Saturday night, but neither could finish the other. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, as each man rocked the other several times, only for Herman to walk away with a split decision victory.

Their combined performance had the crowd screaming, and the UFC brass took notice, thanking them with bonus checks.
