The family of Sid Watkins says it has been touched by the tributes and kind messages that have flooded in following his death on Wednesday night.

Watkins' impact on Formula 1, and his campaign to improve safety, has been widely acknowledged - and a host of past and present drivers have offered their condolences for a man they know did so much to help the sport.

In light of the outpouring of emotion, Watkins' family issued a statement on Thursday expressing their gratitude for all that has been said.

It was also announced that a memorial service will be held in the next few months.

The statement said: "Professor Sid Watkins, Formula 1 doctor and leading neurosurgeon, died peacefully in a London hospital lat night aged 84, after a short illness.

"His family would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support and the touching tributes from the world of motor racing, medicine and beyond.

"There will be a private family funeral in Scotland followed by a memorial service in London in the coming months, details of which will be announced shortly."
