Stevenage boss Graham Westley could scarcely contain his delight after his side struck early on to beat League One leaders Charlton 1-0 at Broadhall Way.

The Addicks went into the game undefeated, but Chris Powell's men were undone by a smart finish from Stacy Long.

Westley said: "It just gets better and better. The lads have been brilliant all season and to welcome the leaders here and to send them back pointless is just amazing."

He added: "Charlton are not that long out of the Premier League and they still boast a side that is full of quality, from back to front.

"We had worked hard in the week and we knew we'd have plenty of significant threats to try and nullify, but in the end we've done that and we've held out for a precious victory.

"This team continues to surprise and delight me in equal measures.

"Everybody will have had us down to struggle big time this season, but we continue to prove any doubters wrong."

Charlton boss Powell praised Stevenage as they secured another eye-catching win.

He said: "Credit to Stevenage, they've been a breath of fresh air so far this season. It's a disappointing outcome for us though. We've lost a proud unbeaten record despite bossing large periods of the game.

"The chances were there for us. We looked a threat going forward but the finishing touch wasn't there for us."
