Oxford manager Chris Wilder claimed his side deserved their place in the npower League Two promotion race after Jon-Paul Pittman led a 3-0 demolition job of Aldershot.

Pittman, who scored in the 1-1 draw with Crawley on Monday, headed in Peter Leven's cross on eight minutes and defender Michael Duberry swept in half an hour later to double the lead. The game was all but over in first-half stoppage time when Leven crashed in a third before Deane Smalley almost notched a fourth before the finish.

Wilder said: "One of the criticisms of my team is that we haven't been clinical enough in front of goal but we scored at the right times. We talked about cementing our place in the play-offs and not looking back or taking a backwards step and I don't think anyone can deny that we deserve to be in those spots now."

He added: "I am looking for the boys to kick on, they are a great group with a good spirit and they are desperate to do well for the club and themselves.

"We haven't achieved anything yet, it's been a good performance and win but it's gone now and moving forward is our next priority.

"As soon as the players started believing they are better than they are, you can get found out. We have to keep our heads down and carry on producing the same standard of performance."

After seeing his side's winless run extended to four games, Shots boss Dean Holdsworth admitted he was on the lookout for added impetus in attack during the January transfer window.

"The lack of goals is a worry but it's my job to bring in some firepower and I will be doing that during the transfer window, and hopefully the players coming in can help to solve the problem and take some pressure off us," he said.

"We came up against a good side but the difference between the two teams was the quality of forwards that they could field and you have to pay more for quality players.

"There's no quick fix but I have to start getting some confidence into the squad again so we can turn this run around."
