Kevin McDonald was absent as Sheffield United's players returned for pre-season training

Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson remains hopeful Kevin McDonald will sign his new deal despite the out-of-contract midfielder's failure to show up for pre-season training.

Wilson is also hoping another out-of-contract player, McDonald's midfield team-mate Lee Williamson, will commit to another season at Bramall Lane.

"We've still got Lee Williamson and Kevin McDonald who have yet to sign and we don't know what's going to happen with those two. There's no decisions forthcoming yet," Wilson told Press Association Sport.

"Is Kevin McDonald going to come? I don't know. He didn't turn up for training on Monday which we expected him to do, although he is out of contract.

"But Lee Williamson turned up and he's out of contract. I would have thought that Kevin would have come down and got some fitness under his belt just in case, whatever happens."

Wilson added: "It's his prerogative to try and get the best deal for himself and I think his agent is doing that and has been doing that for a long time. He's still a free agent and we're pitched in there very highly."
