Francisco Junior gave the Toffees an early lead before Leon Osman set up further goals for Apostolos Vellios and Jack Rodwell before half-time.

Victor Anichebe grabbed number four before Jim Bentley, whose testimonial the match was for, fittingly hit a consolation for the npower League Two hosts.

Simon Church scored a 15-minute hat-trick as Reading thumped AFC Wimbledon 7-0 in their opening pre-season friendly at Kingsmeadow.

Adam Le Fondre opened the scoring from the penalty spot for the Barclays Premier League new boys after Aaron Downes had tripped Noel Hunt.

Le Fondre doubled his and Reading's tally just before the interval having been put through by Kaspars Gorkss.

Michail Antonio bagged the third after the break before Church struck twice, with a header and a close-range strike after Jason Roberts' shot was saved.

A minute later Jordan Obita's left-footed strike made it six before Church completed his treble with a low shot 20 minutes from time.

Sam Baldock scored his third goal in three pre-season matches as West Ham beat Southend 3-0 at Roots Hall.

The former MK Dons frontman struck just after the hour mark when he crashed in the rebound after Shrimpers keeper Rhys Taylor fumbled Elliot Lee's shot.

Nicky Maynard put the Hammers in front in the first half when he headed in Matt Taylor's corner and young right-back Jordan Spence drilled in the second before half-time.

The only sour note for boss Sam Allardyce was the sight of young left-back Dan Potts being stretchered off after an aerial challenge.

Former Hammers trainee Freddy Eastwood got a late run-out for Southend but could not manage to grab a consolation goal.

New signing Brett Holman netted a second-half winner as Aston Villa battled back from behind to beat Burton Albion 2-1 in their friendly at Pirelli Stadium.

Australia international Holman, a summer arrival from AZ Alkmaar, struck the deciding goal for Paul Lambert's side in the 83rd minute of their opening pre-season fixture.

Hosts Burton had earlier taken a ninth-minute lead through a long-range effort from Robbie Weir before Villa drew level just before half-time following an own goal by triallist Marcus Holness.
