WSOF 17 Results: Jake Shields Grabs Quick Win, Sets Sights on ‘Dirty Fighter' Rousimar Palhares

Jake Shields wasted little time to secure a WSOF 17 win, finishing Brian Foster in the first round on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Shields brought the fight to the ground and soon after secured Foster's back, scoring a rear-naked choke at 2:51 of the opening round.

“Anytime you finish a fight in the first round, you're happy,” Shields said.

Foster came out swinging in the opening stages, looking for the early knockout. Shields took advantage of his opponent's focus on power strikes, dropping a level and putting Foster on his back.

Once on the ground, Shields held and never released advantageous positions. Eventually, he transitioned to Foster's back and sunk in the rear-naked submission.

The win secured Shields a shot at the WSOF welterweight title currently held by Rousimar Palhares. The champion has been known to hold leglock submissions for too long, and this has resulted in a bad reputation in the MMA industry. Shields echoed much of the same as those who hold Palhares in that light, adding that he's coming to take a title that's rightfully his.

“He's holding my belt for me. I'm going to go out there and whoop his ass,” he said. “He's a dirty fighter, breaking everybody's legs and ankles, but I'm going to go out there and I'm going to take his knee out. I'm not scared of him and I'm going to bring it to him.”

Late replacement Joe Condon came from behind to beat Johnny Nunez in the evening's co-main event. After getting dominated for two and a half rounds, Condon sunk in a deep guillotine choke late in the third round. The hold made Nunez's neck turn at an awkward angle, giving him no option but to tap out at the 4:22 mark of the round.

In a middleweight bout, Krasimir Mladenov defeated Brendan Kornberger by unanimous decision with scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Other main-card winners include Bryson Hansen for his win over Rudy Morales and Danny Davis Jr. for his defeat of Adam Cella.
