Yoel Romero Drops Out of UFC on FOX 15, Chris Camozzi Steps In

An injury has forced the planned fight between Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Yoel Romero to be nixed for the second time this year.

Souza and Romero were supposed to have fought at UFC 184 in February, but Souza fell ill to pneumonia and had to withdraw. The fight was rebooked for next week’s UFC on FOX 15 fight card, but now Romero has fallen out of the fight due to injury.

Romero, according to a report by MMAFighting.com, “suffered a ligament and meniscus tear in his knee during training.”

Jacare will remain on the card. He will face last-minute opponent Chris Camozzi.

Camozzi (21-9) exited the Octagon late last year on the heels of a four-fight skid, but he didn’t sit idly by. He continued fighting elsewhere, winning and defending the Prize Fighting Championship middleweight title in Denver.

Stepping up on short notice to fight Jacare is more than an opportunity to get back into the Octagon; it also affords him an opportunity to exact a measure of revenge. Jacare was the fighter that kicked off the losing streak that forced Camozzi out of the UFC.

Jacare (21-3, 1 NC) is on a seven-fight winning streak, including three consecutive wins after he beat Camozzi, and is on the cusp of a title shot.

A middleweight fight between Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold headlines UFC on FOX 15 on April 18 in Newark, N.J.
