Young guns shine in Japan

Home favourite Shun Murakami took the plaudits on the opening day of the Billabong Pro Tahara in Japan.

In solid one-to-three foot (one metre) waves, Murakami recorded the highest single-wave score of the day, storming to a 6.67 (out of a possible 10) to win her heat in the round of 96.

Hawaiian Kylen Yamakawa quickly followed Murakami into the next round with a 6.50, with a top heat score of 12.50 out of a possible 20.
