It was a positive step for Gautang cricket, when Geoffrey Toyana was appointed the new head coach of the Highveld Lions in 2012.
A left-handed batsman, Toyana played 84 first-class matches for the Easterns, Gauteng, Transvaal and the Titans between 1995 and 2011. He took to coaching soon after he hung his boots and worked his way up the coaching ladder. The 38-year old was an assistant coach with South Africa’s Under-19 team and the Emerging Players sides. Apart from being a cricketer who never got the chances he deserved, Toyana balanced his playing ambition with his coaching aspirations and became Easterns’ head coach in2008. He assisted Lions’ previous coach Dave Nosworthy, before finally taking his place in 2012 ahead of a new season.
