  1. 19:45 - So Nadal remains on course to complete his career Grand Slam with a place in his first US Open final, where he will face the winner between five-times champion Roger Federer and third seed Novak Djokovic, who are on court next

  2. 6-4 - WINNER! Nadal races out to three match points. But one is all it takes as the world number one reaches his first US Open final with that much improved first serve out wide again proving too much for Youzhny as he returns the ball into the net

  3. 5-4 - BREAK! A third ace of the match from Youzhny gets him out of a spot of potential bother at 15-30 down before a fifth double fault hands Nadal an immediate break back point. The chance goes begging when a solid serve out wide that the Spaniard can only return into the net but Youzhny misses an easy high backhand volley into the net to gift Nadal a second chance. And this time Nadal gets it when Youzhny hits a backhand wide down the line. Nadal will serve for the match

  4. 4-4 - BREAK! Well, well. Nadal slaps a forehand into the top of the tape to hand Youzhny a break back point. And the Russian grabs the opportunity with both hands, working Nadal around the baseline before firing a smash winner down the line. We're back on serve in this third set. Does Youzhny have something left in him yet?

  5. 4-3 - Youzhny has hit a whopping 10 unforced errors in this set alone, compared to five from Nadal, but despite that he keeps the pressure vaguely on Nadal with another service hold

  6. 4-2 - Another comfortable service hold for Nadal and he is just doing enough now to get himself through and preserve his energy for what is bound to be a tough final tomorrow irrespective of whether he faces Federer or Djokovic

  7. 3-2 - Much better from Youzhny as he comfortably holds to 15 to keep the deficit down to just the one break in this set. The Russian's problem though is that he just doesn't seem to have anything to hurt Nadal today

  8. 3-1 - Nadal, bidding to become just the seventh man to win a career Grand Slam, cruises through another service hold to consolidate the break and he is potentially just three games away from the final in New York now

  9. 2-1 - BREAK! Ouch. Youzhny slaps what should have been a fairly straight-forward forehand into the net to hand Nadal an early break point opportunity in this second set. And a nervy inside out forehand from Youzhny into the tramlines hands Nadal the break that surely has him a place in the final. The Spaniard is doing what he does best, forcing Youzhny for to go for too much and sweeping up when the Russian hits the inevitable errors

  10. 1-1 - Nadal's serving this tournament has been incredibly good as he holds once again for the loss of just the one point, levelling up when Youzhny slaps a forehand return well long of the baseline

  11. 0-1 - Youzhny ahead in a set for the first time in this match, holds for the opening game of this third set when Nadal squanders a great chance to put some more pressure on his opponent with a forehand long whilst trailing 40-30

  12. 6-3 - SET! Nadal drops the first point on serve with a poor off-forehand drop shot that Youzhny gets to easily before riffling a forehand passing shot winner down the line. But Nadal quickly recovers to bring up two set points with a second ace of the match. And one is all that's needed as the Spaniard comes up with another heavy first serve down the centre of the court that Youzhny can only return into the net

  13. 5-3 - BREAK! Well hello. Youzhny sends consecutive forehands (one a ground-stroke, the other a volley) long to hand Nadal a 0-30 lead against serve. And the Spaniard pounces, bringing three break points with some terrific defence that eventually hussling Youzhny out of the point and breaking at the second attempt with a cracking off-forehand across court that the Russian can only return well long. Nadal will serve for the second set

  14. 4-3 - A second straight love service game for Nadal as he holds when Youzhny fires a forehand long down the line after a lengthy rally. The Russian is sticking with Nadal much more closely in this second set but you still get the distinct impression that Nadal has another couple of levels to move through should he need it.

  15. 3-3 - Nadal has an injury time-out to have a blister on his left foot seen too and takes the opportunity to have his left ankle re-strapped whilst he's at it. Afterwards, Youzhny appears to be cruising towards a love service game before an explosive forehand return of serve from Nadal followed by a double from the Russian allows the Spaniard back into the game. But Youzhny does recover to hold with a solid first serve that Nadal can only return into the net

  16. 3-2 - Rafa's first ace of the match seals another love service hold as the Spaniard speedily slings all the pressure back over the net at Youzhny. Unfortunately for the Russian you get the impression that it's only a matter of time until Nadal breaks. And apart from that fifth game in the first set, the Spaniard has looked very confident behind his own serve

  17. 2-2 - Nadal is thoroughly unimpressed with himself when he misses a forehand return off a second serve. It lets Youzhny off the hook at 15-30 down but, while Nadal goes on to miss another forehand and hand the Russian a game point, the Spaniard does recover with a much better off-forehand across court to level up at deuce. And, after another couple of deuces, Youzhny does go on to hold and stick with Nadal

  18. 2-1 - Nadal cruises through another solid service hold to 15, finding a great first serve once again and firing off the resulting easy off-forehand across court and into the corner for a winner

  19. 1-1 - Youzhny produces a confidence building forehand drop shot winner after a lengthy rally to earn himself a couple of game points before holding with an ace to get off the mark in this second set. That was an important game for the Russian to keep him mentally in this match

  20. 1-0 - A first double fault of the match lets Youzhny into a game that he otherwise would have been shut out of but Nadal speedily recovers and holds to 15 with a forehand winner. The world number one looks supremely comfortable right now

  21. 6-2 - SET! Youzhny sends a forehand whizzing long of the baseline to hand Nadal three set points. The first gets away from the Spaniard as he nets a forehand, after running round the ball. But he does wrap up the second break and the set at the second attempt with a dipping forehand passing shot undoing Youzhny at the net

  22. 5-2 - Youzhny takes point off the Nadal serve with a backhand winner fired across court before an attempted at exactly the same shot ends in the net to hand the Spaniard two game points. And, although he squanders the first chance by hitting out, Rafa does hold to leave Youzhny serving, after the change of ends, to stay in this opening set

  23. 4-2 - Youzhny's first double fault of the match allows Nadal a glimpse at another break at 30-30 but the Russian stretches his opponent wide on the forehand wing forcing the Spaniard to hit. And he goes on to hold when Nadal sends an inside out forehand return of serve wide across court

  24. 4-1 - Nadal looks to be cruising to a love service hold to consolidate his break before letting Youzhny back into the game with a couple of errors. The Russian levels at deuce with a stunning backhand dinked across after a Nadal drop shot. A complete mis-hit from Youzhny, more to protect himself than anything else, turns into a perfect lob and denies Nadal on his first game point before Youzhny sets up a break point with a deft drop shot. Nadal saves it with a great serve before going on to hold

  25. 3-1 - BREAK! Nadal enjoys the first break point of the day as Youzhny works Nadal around the baseline to engineer an opening before just failing to execute his attempted forehand winner. And the Spaniard takes full advantage of the chance, easily moving up to a shorter ball and whipping an off-forehand winner across court and onto the line. Youzhny challenges but Nadal was not going to miss that and sure enough hawkeye shows the ball was smack on the line

  26. 2-1 - The first point against serve goes the way of Youzhny as Nadal slaps a long forehand long of the baseline but the Spaniard quickly recovers and holds without the loss of another point when Youzhny misses just long himself

  27. 1-1 - Youzhny, wearing a black ribbon pinned to his left sleeve presumably in memory of the September 11 terrorist attack victims, also opens with a love service game. That's a great sign from the Russian, whose level of play this match depends on more than anything else. If he comes out here firing on all cylinders than we'll have a match on our hands. If not, it could be a walkover for Nadal

  28. 1-0 - Youzhny makes a crowd-pleasing start to the match with a attempted lob that has even the incredibly fast Nadal scampering back towards the baseline. But the ball drops just out and Nadal goes on to hold to love with a couple of emphatic forehand volleys buried into the open court

  29. 0-0 - The players are finally ready to go and it will be world number one Nadal to get things underway after Youzhny won the spin of the coin and opted to receive first

  30. 17:15 - It's another glorious day in New York today with the current temperatures around about 27 degrees and barely a cloud in the sky. And that is not set to change any time soon. Even the wind, which has been really troublesome in the past couple of days, seems to have dropped a little today

  31. 17:11 - This is just Nadal's third US Open semi-final, the world number one losing to runner-up Andy Murray in 2008 and eventual champion Juan Martin Del Potro last year. But the Spaniard, apart from not dropping a set up to this stage this year, has only dropped serve once in 77 service games so far this tournament

  32. 17:09 - Well we're about to find out as the players make their way out on to the Arthur Ashe Stadium with the national anthem having been sung and duly applauded

  33. 17:05 - Just as a side point though, if you get rid of the clay court and grass court results, Youzhny actually leads their head-to-head statistics 4-3 on hard courts. Is that a telling figure?

  34. 16:51 - These two have met each other 11 times before with the stats overwhelmingly in Nadal's favour, unsurprisingly. The Spaniard has won seven of there meetings including four of their last five. Youzhny did win for the loss of just one game in Chennai in early 2008 but that's a pretty misleading result. And Wimbledon 2008 was the last time these two players met. A lot has changed for both of them since then

  35. 16:49 - The Russian has come past tricky Spaniard Tommy Robredo as well as seeds John Isner and Stanislas Wawrinka on his way to a second US Open semi-final. But world number one Rafael Nadal should prove a step too far as he too has been on scintilating form, cruising through to this stage without dropping a set For a full rundown of the players path to the semi-finals, click here

  36. 16:46 - In many ways this is the appetiser in today's action, not least because it comes first out of our three matches. But to say that is doing a disservice to the incredible form that Mikhail Youzhny has been on this past fortnight

  37. 16:45 - Hello and welcome to this semi-final clash between world number one Rafael Nadal and Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny
