  1. - - NADAL 6-4 6-4 - GAME, SET & MATCH - A first match point goes begging for Nadal as he sends a backhand long as does a second when the Spaniard's chipped forehand return drops just wide and Nishikori earns himself a game point with a forehand lob winner. That chance goes begging though and a cross court forehand wide from Nishikori hands Nadal a third match point. And this time Nadal does wrap up the win when Nishikori sends another forehand wide

  2. - - NADAL 6-4 5-4 - BREAK - Nishikori breaks back with a spec of luck as his backhand catches the top of the tape and rolls over for the perfect drop shot to wrongfoot Nadal on the baseline. We are back on serve in this second set, albeit with the Japanese player serving to stay in the match once again

  3. - - NADAL 6-4 5-3 - Nishikori does well to hold under some pressure from Nadal, even managing to direct a forehand winner down the line when the Spaniard was clearly expecting the ball to come flying towards him up at the net. But Nadal will serve for the match next

  4. - - NADAL 6-4 4-2 - Pressurising the Nishikori serve at 40-30, Nadal sends a cross court backhand just wide and long to allow the Japanese player to hold and stick with him, albeit still a break down

  5. - - NADAL 6-4 4-1 - Nadal takes a notoriously long time between points but Nishikori is not exactly speedy either - the Spaniard taking 32 seconds, compared to 29 from the Japanese player. It seems to help Rafa though as he comes up with an unreturnable serve to end the game and maintain his break advantage

  6. - - NADAL 6-4 3-1 - Nishikori gets his side of the scoreboard ticking over with a much more solid service hold that culminates in a forehand winner. But Nadal is already a set and a break up and it's going to take something spectacular from the Japanese player to get back into this

  7. - NADAL 6-4 3-0 - Another awesome forehand from the world number two seals a quick and speedy service hold to consolidate the break. Nishikori simply cannot deal with that shot from the Spaniard consistently, especially not now that Nadal has well and truly found his range.

  8. - - NADAL 6-4 2-0 - BREAK - Nadal is really beginning to make his class tell now as he grabs a break in just the second game of the second set, a spinning forehand causing too much trouble for Nishikori, who fires wide in return

  9. - - NADAL 6-4 1-0 - By the way Nadal had his knee taped, just below the kneecap during that injury timeout a couple of games ago, but there is no signs of any injury or anything in his movement that would suggest it at least. So it looks like it was just precautionary and he has raced through the opening service hold to get his side of the scoreboard ticking over in this second set

  10. - - NADAL 6-4 - SET - Nishikori saves a couple of set points, the first of when Nadal sends a forehand long and the second with a dipping forehand. But Nadal finally wraps up the set on the third attempt when Nishikori's stretched forehand volley drops wide.

  11. - - NADAL 5-4 - Nadal holds once again to sneak in front, finding a forehand winner before calling the trainer for some treatment to his left knee. Nishikori will have to serve to stay in the set after the change of ends

  12. - - NADAL 4-4 - Nishikori is having to put in some epic defence now as he saves a couple of break points, the latter of which he achieves with a dipping backhand down the line that Nadal fails to get to up at the net. And the Japanese player goes on to hold when Nadal sends a tame return of serve long. Still all square.

  13. - - NADAL 4-3 - A bit more of a tricky service hold for Nadal this time, in terms of length if not score. Nishikori isn't quite so successful as to earn himself a break point but he does manage to push Nadal to 30-30 before the Spaniard can go on to hold and maintain his service lead

  14. - - NADAL 3-3 - Nishikori races through an equally quick service hold to level up once again with a forehand winner

  15. - - NADAL 3-2 - Very quick hold for the world number two to move ahead for the first time in this match.

  16. - - NADAL 2-2 - BREAK - Brilliant winner up the line while stretching by Nadal to seal the one break point he had earned. Back on track.

  17. - - NADAL 1-2 - BREAK - Big break early on for Nishikori with Nadal looking out of sorts. The former has a chance to fight for this set if he keeps up his accuracy.

  18. - - NADAL 1-1 - Another keenly contested game which goes to deuce. This time the Japanese has the edge with his groundstrokes to level matters.

  19. - - NADAL 1-0 - The Spaniard comes through a long-winded opening game. Slow start from him, but Nishikori is looking good.

  20. - - Nadal drops the first two points but wins one back in an entertaining rally which has a flawless Nishikori somehow outplayed at the net. A wide from Nadal gives the Japanese two break points. Nadal saves those and two further ones at advantage down - back to deuce.

  21. - - Nadal to serve first in his match. He was reported today as having quit as vice president of the ATP's player council after clashing with Roger Federer over changes to the rankings system. Nadal quits council

  22. - - Nadal has won their three previous meetings, including their last two in straight sets; neither player has yet lost a set this week.

  23. - - By reaching the round of 16, Nishikori has produced his second-best Masters appearance. He was a semi-finalist at Shanghai last autumn.

  24. - - So, to Nadal. The world number two, three times a finalist in Miami - in 2005, 2008 and 2011 - faces No.16 seed Nishikori looking to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament for the sixth straight year. The 25-year-old Spaniard has not lost before the last eight since he was a teenager back in 2006.

  25. - - Rafael Nadal is first in action against Kei Nishikori on Stadium court in the men's draw at the Sony Ericsson Open today. They are due on court at 16:00 UK time.
