  2. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-6 - ANDY MURRAY HAS WON THE US OPEN! There are delirious scenes on Arthur Ashe as Murray wins the US Open final in the fifth set, and the wait is over as he claims his first Grand Slam title at the fifth attempt! After 76 years, Murray has ended the British wait and he is victorious at Flushing Meadows - he has done it! What a performance, and what a final.

  3. - - This is it, everyone - Novak Djokovic has finished his physio treatment, and Andy Murray will be serving for his first Grand Slam title...

  4. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-5 - BREAK! Murray moves to 15-30 with a backhand slice down the line which Djokovic does not deal with, before he establishes two break points as the Serb goes long with a stray forehand. Murray then breaks serve as Djokovic plants a forehand into the net, and we are now potentially just one game away from Murray's first Grand Slam title! The tension is unbearable, and every British tennis fan will be incredibly excited right now...

  5. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-4 - It's a quite brilliant service game from Murray, who holds to love with two huge aces and a third big first serve as Djokovic is left utterly helpless at the back of the court without a glimmer of an opportunity to get a foothold in the game. Murray is now just two games away from his first Grand Slam title! But who could ever count out Novak Djokovic...?

  6. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 2-3 - Murray pegs Djokovic back to 30-30 with two ferocious forehands from mid-court, but a quite brilliant forehand down the line from the Serb gives him 40-30. Murray picks out the line with a forehand winner of his own to take it to deuce, but Djokovic holds firm with some outrageous hitting from the back of the court, and he comes through to hold and further reduce the deficit.

  7. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 1-3 - BREAK! All of a sudden, Djokovic charges back in this final set as he moves to 0-40 with a surge of aggression, and Murray is on the back foot. Murray saves the first with a backhand down the line which leaves Djokovic to go wide, but he overhits a forehand and sees one of his two breaks of serve eroded. Djokovic has a glimmer of an opportunity again now! /// @MaryDoyle13 and @Btmorrissey are among those imploring Murray to keep his head and keep Djokovic moving.

  8. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 0-3 - BREAK! Murray takes the game to deuce with a forehand down the line, and he breaks serve for a second time in this final set as Djokovic goes long with a forehand! The atmosphere is incredible inside Arthur Ashe, and Andy Murray is currently storming towards his first Grand Slam title with a commanding 3-0 lead with two breaks in this final set! What a story... can he close this out and keep the momentum in his favour?

  9. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 0-2 - There are no cheap points for Murray as he battles his way to 30-30 with two hard-fought rallies, and he comes through an extraordinary hold, edging two epic points with Djokovic left bewildered. Murray is extremely animated now, and roars up to his box after wrapping up the hold to consolidate his break!

  10. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 0-1 - BREAK! What a start to the fifth set from Murray, who bludgeons a forehand down the line to move to 30-40, then finds a quite brilliant forehand down the line which Djokovic can only drive into the net as he breaks! It's a fantastic start to the deciding set, and the crowd are on their feet once more! /// @Philmeneum says Djokovic still has the edge, but @Njoroge_Kamau believes in Murray. It's too close to call right now, but Murray has the early advantage!

  11. - - @Martin_Davey says he hopes that the extra rest day that Murray had will now pay off, while @Arndtbarbera lauds Djokovic's professionalism once more - she thinks he will clinch it. @GPeaple says that all the pressure is now on Murray. @Mistagroove backs Murray to come through, but @iDarkova does not think he has the mental stamina to win. Here we go...

  12. - - Right, it's time to post who you are backing for this fifth and decisive set at Flushing Meadows - do you think Murray can respond in the fifth to take the title, or can you only see the champion retaining his title with all the momentum? Get in touch with your predictions/thoughts...

  13. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 6-3 - SET! The tension is just unbearable for some as Murray is pegged back from 40-0 to deuce with Djokovic rampant, and the Serb forces a break point with a fierce backhand cross court which the Brit can only plant into the net. Murray then goes long with a rather tame backhand, and Djokovic has hauled himself back to level up this match ahead of the decider! We're into a fifth set, folks....

  14. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 5-3 - There is no stopping Djokovic as Murray does incredibly well to force the game to 30-30 with a scintillating forehand cross court to end a long rally, but the reigning champion comes through with an emphatic forehand down the line and a big serve to close it out. Can Murray at least force his opponent to have to serve out, now?

  15. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 4-3 - Murray races to 40-0 with a flurry of incredible groundstrokes as Djokovic is unable to get a foothold in any of the points from the return. Murray closes the game out with a crisp forehand down the line, and now he can attack the Djokovic serve once more with the Serb just two games away from taking the fourth set. Can he force that elusive break back?

  16. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 4-2 - The quality of the tennis is utterly breathtaking and astounding as Murray wins a 30-shot rally to lift the Arthur Ashe crowd to their feet once more! The intensity is unbelievable as Djokovic wins a 20-shot rally to take the advantage, and he finally closes it out with a brilliant forehand down the line! Can Murray hold now and continue to keep Djokovic on the edge as he looks to close out this fourth set? It's utterly gripping.

  17. - - DJOKOVIC 7-6 7-5 2-6 3-2 - Djokovic is utterly relentless as he slams two huge forehands down the line, but Murray comes through with an exceptional forehand of his own to level at 30-30, and he goes on to hold serve with a succession of big serves. He now has another chance to attack the Djokovic serve.

  18. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 3-1 - A couple of wonderful forehands which drop onto the baseline give Murray a break point at 30-40, and suddenly he looks like roaring back in this fourth set! But Djokovic wears him down in an exhausting rally to take it to deuce, and from there he comes through with two big first serves, before punching the air with relief and delight!

  19. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 2-1 - Murray, to his credit, holds himself together at 30-30 at an extremely testing point in his service game as he stared down the barrel of another break, and he comes through with two fine first serves and forehands to back each up. He holds to get on the board belatedly in this fourth set. Can he now build on this? /// @ArndtBarbera believes that Murray is a great player, but that he is his worst enemy. Many would agree with that.

  20. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 2-0 - Djokovic moves to 30-15 with a huge serve outwide after a long rally, and he closes out the game with a belligerent forehand down the line as Murray fails to do any more than plant a backhand mid-court without any power. It's all Djokovic now, and he consolidates his break of serve fairly comfortably. /// @Sue1m2 says Lendl knows how Murray works, and it is all about his mindset. You are dead right - but he's struggling!

  21. - - @JohnReading1 begs Murray to stop messing about and play his game, while @AndtBarbara is getting frustrated with his attitude on court and says Djokovic is the true professional. @Cosmic251 believes Murray will roar back because he's a Scot. Enough said!

  22. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 1-0 - BREAK! Djokovic is rampant now as he moves to 40-15 with two break points as Murray falters at the start of the fourth set, and he can do no wrong at the moment as he volleys down the line to close it out, before roaring to the heavens! Murray looks despondent all of a sudden, and Djokovic is incredibly fired up as he breaks straight away.

  23. - - Okay, who thinks Murray is going to come through despite losing the third set? He is going to have to lift himself once more and give this set absolutely everything. He's already complained of 'jelly legs', and Djokovic is sensing that there is a way back for him. Let me know your thoughts...

  24. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 6-2 - SET! Djokovic recovers from being lobbed at 15-15 to race through his service game, taking it to 30 to close out the third set! After three hours and 12 minutes, Djokovic is now just one set down as he eyes a fifth. There's a long way to go, everyone, and Murray will have to lift himself yet again to produce the set of his life in the fourth!

  25. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 5-2 - BREAK! Murray suffers as Djokovic continues to pin him back behind the baseline, and two weary forehands into the net in successive points see Djokovic move to 15-40. Murray saves the first break point with a fine forehand cross court, but a quite magnificent forehand return which pings off the baseline from Djokovic gives him another break in this third set!

  26. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 4-2 - Djokovic commits his fourth double fault of the match as he allows Murray to move to 15-30, and the Brit forces two break points as Djokovic shoves a backhand long under real pressure. Can Murray break back? He goes long with a forehand after an epic rally to squander the first, and a monstrous forehand cross court sees the Serb save the second. Murray then plants a backhand return into the net, before a tired forehand wide as Djokovic holds!

  27. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 3-2 - Murray will not be dictated to in this third set, and he finds three big first serves to ensure that Djokovic cannot take control of the game once more. Djokovic throws his racket to the ground as he walks over to his chair, and now he will need to refocus again for his next service game with Murray desperate to hit back. /// @ChrisOmmanney says he can't leave the match but is up at 4am. You're staying, then!

  28. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 3-1 - A truly remarkable point is won by Djokovic as he plays a gorgeous drop shot to bring Murray into the net, then lobs him to end a long rally in fine fashion! He moves to 40-15, but then goes wide with a sloppy forehand. A monstrous serve outwide from Djokovic gives him the game, and a cushion in this third set. Murray needs to hold now.

  29. - - @NaomiAustin says: "God, I'm gonna be tired getting up at 6, driving 45 miles to Boro & teaching all day, but I DON'T CARE! COME ON MURRAY!!!!!" You are dead right to be staying up for this one, Naomi.

  30. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 2-1 - BREAK! Djokovic produces another exquisite forehand down the line to move to 15-30, and he's throwing everything at Murray right now as the Brit commits a double fault to leave his opponent with two break points. Djokovic only needs one, as he bludgeons a forehand return back onto the line, and Murray is left helpless as he falls a break down in this third set.

  31. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 1-1 - Djokovic moves to 30-15 with a blazing forehand down the line which Murray cannot retrieve, but the Brit slams a forehand of his own down the line to level at 30-30. Somehow, Djokovic produces a sublime drop volley at the net to close out the game from 40-30, and that's ridiculous! Thrilling... /// Jim Hurdwell says, "Surely Murray must succeed in GB's summer of sporting greatness?!" Jordie Daniels is backing him to break his GS duck.

  32. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 0-1 - The quality of the tennis on show is quite staggeringly good, and Murray saves the first of two break points with a glorious forehand cross court after a series of hammer blows from Djokovic gave him 15-40. A big serve from Murray saves the second, and he roars through deuce with two more big serves - what a gutsy response to hold! /// @MaryDoyle13 believes if he can keep his head straight, Murray will win this!

  33. - - Incredible drama as Murray moves just a set away from a maiden Grand Slam title, and he has all the momentum now as Djokovic slumps in his chair having been broken at the end of the second set. Can Murray close this out? Can Djokovic roar back with an amazing comeback? Let me know your thoughts on Twitter...

  34. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-7 - BREAK AND SET! Murray moves to 15-40 with a flurry of sensational groundstrokes as Djokovic is suddenly unable to find a decent first serve, but he drops his return into the net to squander the first opportunity. But he takes the second as Djokovic goes wide with a forehand cross court, and Murray takes the second set in thrilling fashion!

  35. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-6 - Murray has to come through from 40-30 in a crucial service hold as he moves in to the net to volley down the line after Djokovic had pegged him back with an emphatic smash. There's nothing between the two players as Djokovic now has to hold to stay in the set.

  36. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 5-5 - This is an inspired resurgence from Djokovic after conceding 11 early unforced errors in the set, and he is blowing Murray off the court right now as he holds to level. Can the third seed hold his composure and close out his next service game with Djokovic very fired up and thriving? This is a crucial stage in the set, and Murray cannot afford to wilt.

  37. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 4-5 - BREAK! Djokovic makes his presence felt once more with a truly stunning forehand cross court which forces Murray to plant a forehand into the net, and he's playing some incredible tennis again now as he moves to 0-40. Murray cannot repel his opponent, who continues a quite brilliant onslaught by breaking back!

  38. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 3-5 - Djokovic holds firm to come through his service game after a testing start, and Murray will now have to hold under extreme pressure to close out this second set! Can he do it? He conserves energy in Djokovic's hold, and will now give it everything once more. /// @LoggyBazs believes Murray must capitalise on Djokovic's tiredness while he can. @Duncan_steels thinks it's very dangerous for Murray to hand the initiative back to Djokovic.

  39. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 2-5 - Murray arrests a mini-slump with a hugely composed service game, and he holds with a big serve outwide to close it out. The third seed calms the nerves with a convincing hold, and now the defending champion, Djokovic, must hold to stay in the second set!

  40. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 2-4 - It's a monumental game once more as both players trade blows from the back of the court, but Djokovic comes through with another huge forehand down the line as Murray moves in from the baseline. Djokovic has really tightened up his approach, and has cut down on the unforced errors, crucially.

  41. - - @Duncan_Steels says: "Murray must consolidate the break points earned, you don't get many against NOLE." Incidentally, Boris Becker has just advised Murray to "take that form and ride with it, baby!" Interesting expression from him there.

  42. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 1-4 - BREAK! Djokovic hits back with a fearsome forehand down the line, and Murray is unable to prevent the Serb from breaking to reduce the deficit as he goes wide with a backhand on the stretch. He still has a break in hand, but it's getting desperately tight once more.

  43. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 0-4 - BREAK! This is quite incredible from Murray as he slams a forehand down the line, and Djokovic proceeds to commit his 10th and 11th unforced errors of the set - his opponent has conceded just one and is playing almost faultless tennis right now.

  44. - - Sriram reckons this will go to five sets, while Loggy Bazs and Nancy Tunnell believe that Murray will come through and win. MistaGroove says "something special is in the air tonight", and Lynn Larkins is tipping Murray to win his first Slam tonight!

  45. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 0-3 - Murray holds comfortably as Djokovic goes long with two forehands - one after a thrilling 24-shot rally. The third seed is thriving now as he opens up a commanding lead in this second set, but no one is silly enough to write of Djokovic at this stage. It's just a single break of serve, after all.

  46. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 0-2 - BREAK! Djokovic is suddenly wilting as he plants a forehand into the net, then goes long with a backhand as Murray takes control and swiftly moves to 0-40. Djokovic blazes a reckless backhand wide, and he's looking ragged all of a sudden as Murray breaks!

  47. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 0-1 - After a staggering 24-minute tie-break, Murray manages to hold his composure and calm himself down a touch in order to hold serve at the start of the second set, and this is just thrilling tennis all the way as Murray finds the line with a fierce forehand to close it out.

  48. - - Phew! Well, what did you make of that? Do you still think Djokovic will come through to win this match and retain his title, or are you backing Murray after that amazing first set? Get in touch with your thoughts on Twitter

  49. - - DJOKOVIC 6-7 (10-12) - SET! What an incredible set of tennis as Murray produces a huge serve outwide and Djokovic goes long with a backhand. Murray roars "COME ON!!!" and he finally closes out the opening set. 87 minutes of unbearable tension, and Murray leads.

  50. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (10-10) - Djokovic finds the line with an exquisite forehand, then again with a big ace as he levels at 10-10. This could hardly be closer right now, and both players are giving absolutely everything to win this openign set!

  51. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (8-9) - Murray goes wide with a forehand lob as Djokovic is caught at the net, and this is incredibly tense! Both players are playing safe, and long rallies continue to follow. Murray squanders another opportunity! But he'll get another as Djokovic falters with a poor backhand wide - can Murray do it this time?

  52. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (7-8) - A collective sigh goes around Arthur Ashe as Murray puts a forehand into the net on set point, but he has a third as Djokovic again goes long with a forehand.

  53. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (6-7) - Djokovic nails an incredible forehand which lands on the line as he saves set point, but he loses the next with an overhit forehand, and Murray has a second opportunity...

  54. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (5-6) - Murray wins three points in succession as Djokovic plants a backhand into the net, and a big serve ensures that he moves in front. Djokovic will now serve with his opponent having a set point.

  55. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (4-3) - Djokovic holds his arms aloft after winning an incredible 30-shot rally, but Murray hits straight back with a very fine serve to the body of his opponent.

  56. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (3-2) - Murrray gets himself back level with a string of lusty blows from the back of the court and a drop shot to finish off a very fine point, but Djokovic edges back in front with a smash to close out another tight rally.

  57. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 (2-1) - Djokovic makes a bright start to the breaker with two well-crafted points, but Murray wins a long rally to get on the board as the Serb plants a forehand into the net on the stretch.

  58. - - DJOKOVIC 6-6 - The decibel level rises at Flushing Meadows as Djokovic fights back to 30-30 but Murray's first ace of the match comes with good timing and is followed by a Nole forced error to set up an opening-set tiebreak.

  59. - - DJOKOVIC 6-5 - Murray will need to hold again to force a tie-break as Djokovic looks the best he has all match thus far with a spotless service game.

  60. - - DJOKOVIC 5-5 - Though Djokovic is powerful in the return, Murray staves off his pressure to hold to 30 and stay in the set.

  61. - - DJOKOVIC 5-4 - And with a hold to love capped by a majestic fourth-point forehand, Novak now has the first crack at taking the opening set if he can break Murray for a third time in game 10 coming up next.

  62. - - DJOKOVIC 4-4 - BREAK! - Extraordinary stuff as Nole restores parity just when it looked like he would relinquish set one with a whimper. It's Murray who stammers into another triple break point after dragging a straightforward forehand following a lightning rally of volleys, but his Houdini impression saving a series of Djok smashes ends at the fourth attempt as the Serbian breaks to 15.

  63. - - DJOKOVIC 3-4 - The title holder hangs on in the first set - just. Murray returns to beat a hold point for deuce, but succumbs from there and misses out on a chance to serve for the first set.

  64. - - DJOKOVIC 2-4 - A staggering 54-shot rally ends when Murray forehands out for 15-30. That's the biggest of the entire tournament so far. But the Olympic gold medallist's response is good as he bullies Djokovic with his serve for three straight points and to hold for the first decent lead of the set.

  65. - - DJOKOVIC 2-3 - BREAK! - Though Djokovic claims the opening point of the fifth, he proceeds to overhit his way to being broken yet again, capping the miserable experience with a double fault, and the Serb is struggling to remain calm early on in the final. His racquet takes a good beating against his chair ahead of the sixth.

  66. - - DJOKOVIC 2-2 - Good first hold from Murray, with a powerful backhand offering Djokovic no compromise in the highlight of the four points in a love-service game. Nole tries an acrobatic volley with his back to his opponent but can only net to seal the sweep.

  67. - - DJOKOVIC 2-1 - A third triple break point in as many games before Djokovic finally wins his first hold point. Enjoying the feeling, he forces Murray to net and eludes him with a crisp forehand for deuce before escaping another break point and holding from deuce two. This match is already feeling somewhat atritional. Errors aplenty from both.

  68. - - DJOKOVIC 1-1 - BREAK! - The champion almost breaks to love back courtesy of a deft backhand volley, unforced error and coming out on top of a 20-hit rally. Murray saves two of the triple break points but backhands limply into net for the break-back.

  69. - - DJOKOVIC 0-1 - BREAK! - And Murray begins by breaking a very sluggish Djokovic to love! Four unforced errors lead to four points without reply and the Scot did not have to do much other than keep the forehand solid on return there.

  70. 21:10 - Warm-ups are over. Djokovic to begin with service. And the US Open final is underway!

  71. 21:00 - The atmosphere is buzzing as Djokovic and Murray arrive on court.

  72. 20:55 - The two players stop in the corridors for pre-match interviews but the time has almost come for the final of the calendar year's last Grand Slam. Are you ready?

  73. 20:50 - It has been 76 years since a British man last won a Grand Slam title, and entire generations have come and gone since Fred Perry won his last major at the 1936 US Open. Who thinks today will be the day that Murray ends the drought? Or will Djokovic blow his old friend off the court with more stunning play on the hard courts? Get in touch with your views via Twitter!

  74. 20:45 - Murray beat Djokovic 7-5, 7-5 in the semi-finals of the London 2012 Olympics Tennis Event in early August, but Djokovic leads 8-6 overall in their head-to-head series. The fans are streaming in, and the atmosphere is building nicely!

  75. 20:40 - Murray had the pleasure of meeting up with 'Scottish royalty' Sean Connery and Sir Alex Ferguson after his US Open semi-final win in New York, so check out the video... 'When Murray met Connery and Fergie'

  76. 20:35 - Only two other players, Kim Clijsters and Murray's coach Ivan Lendl, have lost their first four Grand Slam finals since tennis turned professional. But both Clijsters and Lendl - who went on to win eight and four Slams, respectively - succeeded at the fifth attempt.

  77. 20:25 - Djokovic said ahead of this match: "Most of our matches that we played against each other were very close and only small margins decided the winner. We are big rivals and we have been in top of the men's game for a long time, so we know each other really well. (Murray won) the last match in the Olympic Games but it's a different surface, obviously, and with the different surface different tactics apply. I guess there is no clear favourite. He's going to be very motivated to win the title."

  78. 20:20 - Djokovic has won the last three Grand Slams played on hard courts and holds an 8-6 lead over Murray in their head-to-head matches, including last year's Australian Open final. Who thinks that Murray will come out on top this time?

  79. 20:15 - Speaking ahead of today's final, Murray said: "Winning a major is the last thing that I really want to do. It means a lot to me. It's obviously not easy to lose another Slam final, so I hope this one is a different story. All of those big matches and all of the Slams and Olympics and stuff, they all help in the long run."

  80. 20:10 - Djokovic has won 27 hard-court Grand Slam championship matches in a row, and Murray will have to bring an abrupt end to that extraordinary run if he is to break his duck at the US Open. Final preview in full

  81. 20:05 - Djokovic and Murray first played one another at an U12 tournament in the south of France in 1998. Today, they lock horns in the US Open final, and the stakes are as high as ever: Djokovic can retain his title and pocket $2.9 million in prize money - the largest payout in tennis history.

  82. 20:00 - Welcome to live text commentary of the US Open men's final between Britain's Andy Murray and defending champion Novak Djokovic! Murray, the third seed, is chasing his first Grand Slam title in his fifth final, while Djokovic is looking for his second crown at Flushing Meadows. 2. Well, I am Scottish by birth, parentage residence(now), and long tradition and preference. I am only British by geography, although I am also Scottish by geography. By preference am delighted to be back home, despite a successful career inEngland with tolerant people and good friends there. The United Kingdom is only a political term, devised in 1706 without the franchise of the Scottish people, and by bribery of the Scottish Parliament of the time, who accepted brides of land and money to vote for union. We do not like it, because of lack of economic control from 300 years of a Westminster government who still feel they are colonialists. It might be legal, but it is not just.

  7. All this love for Murray is sweetly sickening, the rolling tripe which is S.ky news has just been showing repeat after repeat of his win, you'd swear there was no other news in the world. Why are they calling it a Grand Slam? I thought that was when you won all four major tournaments in the one season?? Worst of all, if Murray never wins another match, his US Open title will be regurgitated much the same as the flukey world cup win of 66, God help us.

  13. It's one thing to 'know' Murray will win a grand slam after his amazing Olympic gold but quite another that he's actually done it. Fan-blurry-tastic!!! and well deserved. Thanks also to Ivan Lendl who certainly helped him to good to great . We should have some wonderful tournaments in store over the next few years. Can't wait!!

  17. Pity the BBC couldn't be bothered to show the US Open this year, especially as there was a good chance of Murray at least being in the final. Our only grand slam winner since Perry and most of us couldn't watch it on screen. Why should we pay for Sky as well as the licence fee for the BBC?
