  1. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 6-2 - GAME, SET & MATCH! Hampton comes up with one last, huge cross court forehand winner but there is to be no grandstand finish as another couple of restricted backhands go long to hand Azarenka two match points. Only one is needed though, the world number one belting a cross court forehand winner off a weak serve from the injured Hampton

  2. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 5-2 - Azarenka lets out a petulant screech after missing a forehand long to hand Hampton three break back points. The first two go begging on backhands long, while the third is squandered when the American's sliced backhand drop shot falls short into the net. And Azarenka goes on to hold when another backhand ends in the net from Hampton

  3. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 4-2 - BREAK! The errors are starting to rack up for Hampton now as she continues to have to hit with the arm only and not really get the rest of the body involved, although she does manage to find a cross court backhand winner. It is the only point of the game for Hampton though as Azarenka breaks to 15 when the American slices a backhand long

  4. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 3-2 - Azarenka enjoys her easiest service hold in a while as she slices a low backhand over the net to force the error from Hampton and hold to 15 to get back in front

  5. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 2-2 - BREAK! Again Hampton is left doubled over in pain after belting another forehand winner. She seems determined to continue but a forehand goes wide down the line to hand Azarenka the immediate break back. The Belarusian lets out a loud "come on" but there is barely any reaction at all from the crowd who are clearly more behind Hampton that the world number one

  6. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 1-2 - BREAK! Azarenka is clearly struggling to concentrate as she tries to go for the kill. A forehand winner combined by two forehand errors from Azarenka hand the American two break points. And sure enough she does take the lead, stepping up to the basline and firing off a forehand winner that again leaves her doubled over in pain. This is a gutsy, gutsy performance from Hampton, who is nearly in tears at the pain as she walks back to the chair

  7. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 1-1 - It remains to be seen how long Hampton can continue in this match as she is left doubled over in pain after one point. She is belting winners where she can and finds two forehands (one down the line and one across court) and a couple of aces on her way to a hold when Azarenka sends a forehand down the line wide

  8. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 1-0 - Hampton is clearly in a lot of pain every time she hits a forehand - it's going to take at least 15 minutes for any medication to kick in and she had more treatment during the change of ends. She unleashes one more bullet to take the first point of the game but a drop shot falls just short into the net on the second as Azarenka goes on to hold. Hampton's movement is severely restricted but credit to Azarenka is she goes for the kill and forces Hampton to move or lose

  9. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-6 - SET! Finally one of the drop shots Hampton has been trying all match comes off. The American was well behind the baseline but somehow comes up with the perfect spinning backhand drop shot winner. A second drop shot doesn't work quite so well for Hampton as she sends her lob long. But Azarenka hits long to hand the American two set points. And sure enough it is one set all, Azarenka hitting a brilliant serve into the net to concede

  10. - - A bizarre development on Rod Laver Arena as Hampton has called for the trainer just before serving for the second set. There has been no indication of an injury although she is wearing some compression shorts under skirt, which is odd given the temperature that is now up in the mid-20s. It's clearly a lower back issue and, after the assessment, it is decided that Hampton will go off for a full injury timeout of three minutes

  11. - - AZARENKA 6-4 4-5 - Hampton appears to have all the time in the world on the ball as she rattles off another couple of forehand winners on her way to two set points. The first goes astray with a cross court forehand wide and the second on a forehand long. And Azarenka goes on to hold with a forehand that just catches the outside of the line. A real test for Hampton next as she will have to serve for the set after the change of ends

  12. - - AZARENKA 6-4 3-5 - Azarenka is furious with herself after squandering a break point oportunity with an absolutely wild forehand. She slashes at the ground with her racquet in disgust and Hampton takes full advantage of the let-off by holding with a second set ace and a spot of serve and volley which ends with an emphatic high forehand volley winner. Azarenka will have to serve to stay in this second set

  13. - - AZARENKA 6-4 3-4 - A love service game from Azarenka to keep the pressure on Hampton. That's the most convincing game we have seen in a while from the Belarusian as she sends down a series of big first serves, Hampton unable to get most of them back in play effectively

  14. - - AZARENKA 6-4 2-4 - Azarenka takes the first point of the game but Hampton quickly bounces back, a blistering forehand winner from inside the tramlines (right after the serve) followed by consecutive backhand winners. And the American goes on to hold from deuce with a solid serve out wide that Azarenka can only return wide

  15. - - AZARENKA 6-4 2-3 - Much better again from Azarenka as she finally stops the rot and holds to keep the deficit to just the one break. Hampton played her worst shot for some time in that game as well, a mis-timed forehand into the net

  16. - - AZARENKA 6-4 1-3 - Yep, there's another forehand winner from Hampton, the American stepping well inside the court to whip one away across court off a short return of serve from Azarenka. That seals a hold from deuce for the American and she is edging ahead in this second set

  17. - - AZARENKA 6-4 1-2 - BREAK! Azarenka continues to struggle on serve as she finds herself 15-40 down once more. The first goes begging for Hampton when she just fails with the forehand. But the American does break at the second attempt when Azarenka moves up the court only to send her approach shot long. She has won just three points behind her second serve so far, Azarenka, out of 14 attempts

  18. - - AZARENKA 6-4 1-1 - BREAK! Ouch! A vicious forehand from Azarenka, the Belarusian backing away from the ball specifically to take it on the forehand wing and then belting it across court, brings up two immediate break back points. And she gets it at the first attempt, some great length hitting eventually drawing a backhand into the net from Hampton. Back on serve in this second set

  19. - - AZARENKA 6-4 0-1 - BREAK! Hampton's forehand is still causing as she finds an angled cross court winner on her way to two more break points. She only needs the one though, climbing all over the second serve of the world number one, and riffling a backhand winner down the line from well inside the baseline. Fantastic start to the second start for the American, especially after the frustration of ending that first set on the double fault

  20. - - AZARENKA 6-4 - SET! A shocking double fault from Hampton does not help her cause as she finds herself 0-30 down. She gets one of the points back with a forehand winner but Azarenka hammers the backhand on the next point, drawing the error down the line for Hampton, and it's two set points for the Belarusian. Only one is needed though as Hampton lets Azarenka off the hook with a double fault. Shame as the world number one was definitely stuggling with her rhythm

  21. - - AZARENKA 5-4 - BREAK! The world number one is definately rattled now as Hampton steps up to another forehand and riffles a winner down the line. This is quickly followed by yet another double from Azarenka to hand Hampton three more break back points. The first goes begging when Hampton hits long but a forehand into the top of the net from the Belarusian does see Hampton break back for a second time. This clash is back on serve, although Hampton will still have to serve to stay in this first set

  22. - - AZARENKA 5-3 - Great work from Hampton, despite another ill-advised drop shot into the net to concede a point in the game. But the American is not phased and goes to hold to 30 with another blistering forehand winner, this one rattled down the line.

  23. - - AZARENKA 5-2 BREAK! Azarenka's serve completely collapsed in that game as she slaps down three doubles. Hampton even enjoys a break back point when Azarenka's backhand catches the top of the tape and bounces wide. Hampton can't quite take advantage and she pulls a cross court forehand wide but she quickly gets a second chance with a forehand winner. A first ace from Azarenka denies her again but a backhand winner brings up a third chance. And this time she does break when Azarenka hits long

  24. - - AZARENKA 5-1 - BREAK! Hampton waits and waits and waits before whip-cracking a forehand down the line that Azarenka simply cannot return in play. That saves a first break point for the American but a touch of genius seals the second in favour of Azarenka as she puts up an inch-perfect lob that lands smack on the baseline. She had to work hard for that point though, playing a couple more shots that she would've expected.

  25. - - AZARENKA 4-1 - Hampton does fantastically well with a defensive forehand, that she rattles across court on a tight angle, and from there it's an easy forehand winner down the line to level at deuce from 40-15. Azarenka looks a little rattled and sends a forehand long on the next point to hand Hampton a break point. Azarenka saves it and despite another stunning forehand winner from Hampton, the world number one goes on to hold eventually

  26. - - AZARENKA 3-1 - BREAK! Hampton tries to mix it up only to put her attempted drop shot into the net and hand Azarenka two break points. The American saves them both - the second in impressive fashion by again matching the Belarusian stroke-for-stroke on the baseline and coming out on top - but Azarenka earns herself a third chance and this time she does get it, Hampton hitting long off the backhand wing

  27. - - AZARENKA 2-1 - Azarenka is yet to miss a first serve as she holds to 15 when Hampton slices a last-ditch defensive backhand well wide across court. Great signs from the young American, who had a good run in Auckland a couple of weeks ago, as she goes toe-to-toe with Azarenka on the baseline and wins for her one point in the game

  28. - - AZARENKA 1-1 - A solid enough service hold from Hampton as she is pushed to deuce but does not have to face a break point. Already her forehand is doing some damage and she unleashes a bullet comfortably inside the line. Azarenka is not too far away but still she cannot get there, such is the pace it was hit with, and Hampton goes on to hold with another forehand

  29. - - AZARENKA 1-0 - Hampton won the toss but opted to receive and Azarenka has raced through the opening game with a hold to love. The world number one, who admitted she was keen to get off the as soon as possible in the second round, has made a quick start racing out wide on the forehand wing and firing a forehand winner down the line around the net post!
