  3. 17:08 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 5-2 GOLUBEV. The holds are flying in now as Murray secures another to land within a game of victory. In this set, he has produced merely four unforced errors against Golubev’s 15 and is marching assuredly to the end.

  4. 17:05 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 4-2 GOLUBEV. Murray dispatches a brilliant backhand return to tread within two points of a double break but Golubev responds with no nonsense, and holds effortlessly.

  5. 17:00 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 4-1 GOLUBEV. Another routine hold for Murray follows as he edges ever closer to the finishing line. After its eerie absence a set earlier, the serve is truly ticking and offering him a myriad of free points behind it.

  6. 16:57 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 3-1 GOLUBEV. The shot of the match comes as Murray glides from one tramline to the next to come up with an impossible single-handed slice which slides past a hapless net-bound Golubev, moving Murray up another break point. The Brit can’t capitalize, however, and errors offer Golubev his first game of the set.

  7. 16:51 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 3-0 GOLUBEV. No problem this time for Murray. He skips from side to side and picks up a handy hold to extend his lead to three games.

  8. 16:47 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 2-0 GOLUBEV. BREAK! The recovery continues as Murray digs himself into the trenches behind the baseline and rallies to a double break point lead. The first is scuppered by a poor return, the second by the beautiful contrast of Golubev’s ballistic groundstrokes followed by a sickly sweet dropshot. However, a later third is Murray’s as bullies Golubev at the net and slinks the passing shot by his hapless opponent.

  9. 16:43 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 1-0 GOLUBEV. Murray quickly shrugs off his woes from the previous set to hold resolutely. A series of big first serves sealing the first game of a new set.

  10. 16:38 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-6 GOLUBEV. SET! And serve it out, he does. Golubev continues to radiate with confidence, combining well-dispatched serves with brutal forehands including a final hammer blow from that side to seal the set. Still up two sets to one, Murray won’t panic but he’ll undoubtedly be looking to end this affair as soon as possible.

  11. 16:35 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 3-5 GOLUBEV. Murray quickly slinks to a 40-0 lead before Golubev comes bouncing back. However, a service winner is all he needs to secure his service game and leave Golubev to attempt to serve it all out.

  12. 16:31 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 2-5 GOLUBEV. The first hold in a long while comes the way of Golubev to love as a series of rarely landed first serves elicit all the errors needed. Murray shakes his head as he downs a gigantic bottle of water, and rightly so.

  13. 16:28 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 2-4 GOLUBEV. BREAK! The lengthy games and breaks continue as the pair trade game points and break points over the battlefield of deuce. A thunderous forehand straight down the line hands Golubev back the break.

  14. 16:21 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 2-3 GOLUBEV. BREAK! After working so hard to establish his lead, Golubev somewhat throws it all away with a combination of errors followed by a double fault to single-handedly drag Murray back level on serve.

  15. 16:15 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-3 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Suddenly, Golubev is flying and unleashes a series of forehands infused with deft dropshots to find himself up break points. As the pair deliberate between break points and gamepoints and the stalemate of deuce, it is Golubev who rises to snatch another break and his third game in succession.

  16. 16:07 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-2 GOLUBEV. Golubev quickly finds himself up game point, only to stutter and net a backhand. Murray then finds himself up break point, only for Golubev to come screaming back. When the dust has settled, it is Golubev who struts to his chair victorious with more strong forehands and a third set lead.

  17. 16:01 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-1 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Golubev immediately finds himself up 0-30 on Murray’s serve with a sitter of a forehand to strike back immediately. He misses the forehand, but a long Murray backhand presents him with a double break point lifeline. The first is snuffed out with some miraculous defence from Murray, who glides from pillar to post only to offer up the break with a woefully netted forehand in the very next game.

  18. 15:57 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 1-0 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Boom! A searing, red-hot running backhand passing shot from Murray is enough for him to steal the break and put him happily (though not smilingly) on his way. He leads by two sets and a break.

  19. 15:51 - MURRAY 6-1 6-4 GOLUBEV. SET! The crucial hold demands a little elbow grease as Murray immediately falls down 15-30, but some typical netted forehands from Golubev are enough to offer Murray the set and a two-set lead.

  20. 15:45 - MURRAY 6-1 5-4 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Murray quickly roars back to a 15-30 lead, which is equalled with a strong forehand winner. The game looks to be going Golubev’s way at game point, but an unforced error and two stratospheric shanks send the Scot strutting straight for his seat. He'll serve for the set.

  21. 15:41 - MURRAY 6-1 4-4 GOLUBEV. BREAK! A distracted, error-strewn game from Murray concludes with a forehand flying well wide and suddenly the crucial break advantage vanishes into thin air. The Scot has much work to do.

  22. 15:36 - MURRAY 6-1 4-3 GOLUBEV. No break this time as a great love service game for Golubev follows. Thanks to a series of big first serves followed by a rasping forehand to seal it, the pair are contemplating life from their seats in no time.

  23. 15:34 - MURRAY 6-1 4-2 GOLUBEV. No problems for Murray. His serve lights the path to game points, then a perfectly deep backhand skips off the line, catching Golubev well off-guard and capturing the game.

  24. 15:28 - MURRAY 6-1 3-2 GOLUBEV. BREAK! Boom! A couple of thunderous forehands fly from the Golubev racket, but he follows them up with three shanks in succession which bat against his frame and fly to random directions around the stadium. Sadly for him, the shanks outnumber the sweetly-struck strokes and Murray has the break without doing a whole lot.

  25. 15:26 - MURRAY 6-1 2-2 GOLUBEV. As Golubev mouths off to the umpire and anyone who will listen, Murray swiftly levels things once more with big serving and solid, deep groundstrokes. No frills needed.

  26. 15:22 - MURRAY 6-1 1-2 GOLUBEV. It looks for a moment like Murray is about to dig himself out of a Golubev smash, but the challenger responds to Murray’s counterpunching with a deft dropshot. On the next point he cheekily strokes another dropshot to the dismay of Murray. A second hold comes soon after.

  27. 15:19 - MURRAY 6-1 1-1 GOLUBEV. As quickly as Golubev records a slim lead, it is scuppered as Murray unleashes on a few bombastic forehands to level things up at one game all.

  28. 15:17 - MURRAY 6-1 0-1 GOLUBEV. This time, the Kazakhstani begins the set with a strong hold. A series of big first serves and an easy smash to finish guides him to his first hold of the match.

  29. 15:12 - MURRAY 6-1 GOLUBEV. SET! Two set points come and go with thanks to careless Murray errors, before a third is scuppered after a formidable Golubev forehnad. But finally Murray captures it on his fourth and struts to his chair with the first set firmly in his pocket.

  30. 15:06 - MURRAY 5-1 GOLUBEV. BREAK! More ravishing shotmaking flies from Golubev’s side, but Murray counterpunches perfectly. At times he neutralizes the pace of the Kazakhstani’s shots before ending with an effortlessly improvised forehand passing shot. Not bad from Mr Murray.

  31. 15:02 - MURRAY 4-1 GOLUBEV. BREAK! An outrageously crushed backhand arrow-straight down the line grants Golubev another break point, to which he responds with a limp forehand into the net. He’s not happy, and Murray subsequently throws in a sympathy double fault. He bunts a return out and once again isn’t happy. A third break point comes his way, and finally he snatches a break with a return straight down the middle. Golubev returns to his chair slightly happier.

  32. 14:57 - MURRAY 4-0 GOLUBEV. BREAK! At last, some typically flairsome forehands fly off the strings of Golubev’s racquet to grant him game points, to which Murray responds by slipping into his optimal counterpunching mode. Out comes a sweeping crosscourt forehand passing shot followed by an efficient winning backhand return. A hilariously careless second serve flying out at about 800mph grants Murray his second break.

  33. 14:50 - MURRAY 3-0 GOLUBEV. What looked like a comfortable hold in the making is complicated by two errors from Murray, but a service winner snuffs out the break point. A series of deuces follow, with Murray firing down big serves at deuce before a comical error. However, on his fourth game point, a wayward forehand from Golubev secures the break for the Scotsman.

  34. 14:45 - MURRAY 2-0 GOLUBEV. BREAK! The seventh seed wastes no time in putting his foot down, firing a series of forehand winners and watching as Golubev flies a few well past the court. A solid start.

  35. 14:40 - MURRAY 1-0 GOLUBEV. WE BEGIN! Both men hit a deft drop volley winner each within the first three points, but Murray quickly plants himself behind the baseline and rallies Golubev into submission. A strong wide serve seals the first game for the man in black and yellow.
