  1. 04:40 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 6-2 MONFILS. GAME, SET AND MATCH! FEDERER DOES IT! The Swiss champion recovers from two sets down and double match point to steam into the semifinal once again. An incredible effort -- that's why he's a 17-time Grand Slam champion and we're all watching.

  2. 04:37 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 5-2 MONFILS. Monfils strings together a hold, warding off the looming breadstick. A couple of rippling forehand winners in there, but the lights are already out.

  3. 04:36 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 5-1 MONFILS. With haste, and a bundle of hopelessly missed returns from the other side, Federer holds to put himself within a game of victory seemingly mere minutes after he was staring down the barrel of double match point.

  4. 04:33 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 4-1 MONFILS. BREAK! It’s all falling down now. Three thoughtless errors from Monfils, and then he doesn’t even bother to run for a good crosscourt forehand from his opponent. It flies past the Frenchman for a winner, and the match has already been conceded.

  5. 04:32 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 3-1 MONFILS. It took over four sets and three hours, but Monfils finally resorts to attempted trick shots, dumping a hot-dog into the net with little fight left. Needless to say, it isn’t the most difficult service hold of Federer’s career.

  6. 04:29 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 2-1 MONFILS. It looks like there could be another nail into Monfils’ coffin as more errors put Federer at 15-30 on the Monfils serve. The Frenchman is tentative as ever in the rally that ensues, but a missed backhand seems to put him at ease and he finally holds.

  7. 04:26 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 2-0 MONFILS. In the least unsurprising news ever, Federer follows up the break with an easy hold. More shanks fly off the Monfils racquet, and he is down by two games and with a mountain to climb before he even opened his eyes from the horrors of set four

  8. 04:21 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 1-0 MONFILS. BREAK! In the most unsurprising news ever, Monfils dumps a couple of shots into the net, a couple miles out, and limply concedes his serve upon the restart. Perhaps the match, too.

  9. 04:14 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 MONFILS. SET! Federer does it, and with ease. The second seed smashes down a few massive serves and rallies the crowd with a surging fistpump. Tremendous drama, and we’re going to five.

  10. 04:10 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-5 MONFILS. BREAK! After netting the first few points of the game to fall down an ominous 0-30, it looked like Monfils was out of the woods as he rallied back with some big serving and controlled aggression. But out of nowhere, gone went the serve. Two double faults, and the break handed over on a platter.

  11. 04:04 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 5-5 MONFILS. FEDERER errors his way to 15-40 and two match points down, only to return with brave, controlled aggression. He saves both! The first is scuppered with a big inside out forehand followed by a sweep to the net, and the second with a forehand down the line winner. A couple of big serves, and he survives as the crowd goes utterly insane.

  12. 03:56 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 4-5 MONFILS. The ninth game feels like something of otherworldly importance, and as Monfils continues to shout at himself, it’s clear he feels it too. Naturally, it also means that after all the bullish serving, he immediately misses a load of first serves here. No fear, Monfils carves out some big 105mph+ second serves and eventually holds after one deuce.

  13. 03:52 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 4-4 MONFILS. The crowd boo as Monfils checks a mark, and he responds by comically rolling his eyes at them. It’s the only eventful happening in a game that quickly turns out to be a routine serve-dominated hold for the second seed.

  14. 03:48 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 3-4 MONFILS. Monfils isn’t quite as angry as he was but he is still seemingly arguing with himself out loud. A couple of terrible shots – a horrific dropshot and a shank far out – attempt to derail his game, but the otherworldly serving continues as he smashes down a few aces and angrily holds.

  15. 03:44 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 3-3 MONFILS. There are no such problems for Federer. After the break, the second seed slams down a few big first serves and holds with a trademark rapid service game.

  16. 03:43 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 2-3 MONFILS. With a couple of hot-headed double fault, Monfils finds himself down break point. He responds by creasing his face into a frown and screaming at himself in a lengthy rant whilst smashing down massive first serves to scupper the danger and hold. A good tactic, then.

  17. 03:37 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 2-2 MONFILS. BREAK! Well, that lasted long. Monfils isn’t finished and ups his aggression, turning on a crosscourt forehand winner to bring up break point. On the crucial point, the Frenchman brings his opponent to the net before crushing a backhand straight at him, and just like that it’s back on serve.

  18. 03:28 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 2-1 MONFILS. Federer crushes a forehand winner, which brings about yet another loud cheer. After being missing in action all day, the Federer backhand comes to the party as he plucks one straight down the line to bring up two break points. They are saved by some strong Monfils serves, but Federer is feeling himself and comes again. A mis-timed forehand error from Monfils hands him the match, and Federer is on his way back.

  19. 03:23 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 1-1 MONFILS. It’s always interesting to see which language the Federer the polyglot punctuates his piercing forehands with, and today it has been “come on”. Regrettably, no cheering in his opponent’s native language to throw him off. The Swiss saves a break point with a forehand winner and cheers gleefully, but when a Monfils backhand error erases the second one, there is only relief. He eventually holds, but it was tight.

  20. 03:16 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 0-1 MONFILS. A bit more oomph from Monfils on his service game to open up set four compared to the previous one. A few big serves, a bullet crosscourt forehand off a short ball and more solid serving bring him an immediate hold.

  21. 03:11 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 6-4 MONFILS. SET! As has been a very regular occurrence at this tournament, Federer serves out the set to love with no problems whatsoever. The veteran’s feet barely needed to twitch as he slammed down unreturned serve after unreturned serve, holding with some ease.

  22. 03:09 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 5-4 MONFILS. The Frenchman does all he can, smashing down a few big serves and forcing Federer to serve it out.

  23. 03:07 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 5-3 MONFILS. Federer mis-judges a volley, lunging towards his backhand side and dumping the ball into the net before standing up, and staring at the line right next to him in stark realization that it was flying out. Other than that, another routine hold.

  24. 03:04 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 4-3 MONFILS. Like clockwork, Federer holds after dropping serve a few times and then so does Monfils. Some big serves from him, too, and they’re off for a sit-down with the set approaching the business end.

  25. 02:58 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 4-2 MONFILS. At last, another hold from Federer. Some big serves, some confident, bullish rushing to the net and he holds with some ease.

  26. 02:57 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 3-2 MONFILS. BREAK! No hold is safe. After dropping three recent points with poor approach shots, Federer merely dusts himself off and tries again, coming up with a slick first volley to fend off Monfils’ passing shots and eventually finish with a bullish smash. The Frenchman will regret the doublefault at 30-30.

  27. 02:52 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 2-2 MONFILS. After finally giving himself something to work with, Federer somewhat throws it away with a couple of missed forehands followed by a forehand that catches the net and flies out. A hopeless approach shot offering Monfils an easy passing shot hands back the break.

  28. 02:49 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 2-1 MONFILS. After the false start of his first service game, Monfils too holds on with some big first serves to keep the deficit to a minimum.

  29. 02:46 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 2-0 MONFILS. No one consolidates a break better than Roger Federer. The Swiss smashes down a few big serves and holds in barely a second with a love service game, throwing the pressure back onto his opponent’s shoulders.

  30. 02:44 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 1-0 MONFILS. BREAK! After the errors of the previous set, Federer starts his set with a clean slate and powers to a break with the type of thundering forehands that have been so conspicuously absent for much of the match.

  31. 02:38 - FEDERER 4-6 3-6 MONFILS. SET! After some thrilling play, some strange one. Unlike the rapid pace of set one, all Monfils needed to do was hold onto his serve. A strong forehand here, an uncharacteristically good passing shot there and Federer’s errors did the rest of the work..

  32. 02:34 - FEDERER 4-6 3-5 MONFILS. Monfils, in turn, speeds to a 30-0 lead before two edgy forehand errors scrape the score back to 30-30. He too finds some clutch first serves and squeaks out another hold with a huge “ALLEZ!” to land himself within a game of a 2-0 lead in sets.

  33. 02:33 - FEDERER 4-6 3-4 MONFILS. Federer finds himself at quite the ominous scoreline, down 2-4 and 15-30 on his serve, but the second seed quickly searches for and finds come clutch first serves to escape and capture another hold.

  34. 02:29 - FEDERER 4-6 2-4 MONFILS. After some bizarrely measured attack from the wild Frendchman, including a very good backhand down-the-line, Monfils secures his first love hold. Federer hasn’t even won a single point on Monfils’ serve since the turned ankle.

  35. 02:25 - FEDERER 4-6 2-3 MONFILS. Federer responds with an even quicker serve-dominated hold as he finally settles back into a rhythm on his own serve. Now he must break.

  36. 02:22 - FEDERER 4-6 1-3 MONFILS. Despite the ankle worries that still haven’t yet fully subsided, Monfils puts together perhaps his easiest hold of the day. A few big serves, a few missed returns as he barely has to move as he inches ahead once again.

  37. 02:19 - FEDERER 4-6 1-2 MONFILS. A love hold for Federer, with many first serves and little issue. It doesn’t look too good for Monfils, however, who is visibly limping on his turned ankle. On comes the trainer, but only briedly.

  38. 02:17 - FEDERER 4-6 0-2 MONFILS. Well, it wouldn’t be a Monfils match without the Frenchman ending up on the ground. This time, however, it wasn’t from him carelessly flinging his body around the court. The Frenchman turned his ankle, only to get up and smash down a big serve to consolidate the break.

  39. 02:11 - FEDERER 4-6 0-1 MONFILS. BREAK! Well, this is interesting. After Monfils’ hopeless attempts at chipping and blocking returns back, he barrels a rocket return winner with the same technique as those blocks, catching Federer way off-guard. The boldness seems to count for two points, and a poorly thought-out dropshot allows Monfils to do his thing, fly to the ball and take the break.

  40. 02:02 - FEDERER 4-6 MONFILS. SET! The Frenchman saves one of his most convincing service games for when it matters most, screaming down a few big serves to seal a very clutch hold and a very good set of tennis from his side of the court.

  41. 01:56 - FEDERER 4-5 MONFILS. No problems for Federer on this hold. A couple of big serves and a couple of poor returns from Monfils give him the hold that forces the Frenchman to attempt to serve out the set.

  42. 01:55 - FEDERER 3-5 MONFILS. The Frenchman finds himself staring down a 0-30 deficit, but he doesn’t panic. A few big serves quickly bring it level at 30-30, then something strange happens. First he lures the Swiss into a forehand error with a series of the weakest and shortest backhands ever seen, then he crushes down a first serve and follows it into the net with an assured, sliding first volley. A big smash down the line just catches the back of the line, and he holds.

  43. 01:51 - FEDERER 3-4 MONFILS. The action-packed opening continues, with both men rushing from side to side and the game played at a break-neck tempo. Some more of the usual athleticism from Monfils comes again as he looks frighteningly focused on securing a second break, but his forehand return really lets him down as Federer keeps himself in touch.

  44. 01:47 - FEDERER 2-4 MONFILS. Monfils’ aggression in his service games have been a feature this fortnight, and they continue as he slinks around to hit his favourite wing and combines with an inside-out forehand and an inside-out forehand winner. A big serve on game point, and he consolidates the break with ease.

  45. 01:42 - FEDERER 2-3 MONFILS. BREAK! La Monf is in the building. An easy Federer forehand looks to be going out, so obviously Monfils, caught in no-man’s land, merely conjures up an incredible 75-ish miles per hour volley from his laces. The pair find themselves at deuce again, Monfils missing game point with a poor passing shot, Federer’s footwork uncharacteristically poor and forcing him to mis-hit and mistime forehands. Eventually it’s Federer’s errors that decide the game and the Frenchman is in the lead.

  46. 01:35 - FEDERER 2-2 MONFILS. There are no such problems for Mr Monfils this time around, however. The serve gets cranking and he stays well away from the wide serve to Federer’s forehand that caused a heck of a lot of issues in his first service game. A forehand miss from Federer brings home the bacon.

  47. 01:30 - EDERER 2-1 MONFILS. Federer still refuses to have no such problems on his own delivery. The Swiss once again finds himself quickly at 40-0, though this time he dumps a backhand into the net. Monfils, apparently yearning to sit down, helps his opponent along with a bizarre attempt at charging behind a chipped forehand. Before he can charge, though, the chipped forehand flies long.

  48. 01:24 - FEDERER 1-1 MONFILS. It’s not quite as easy for Monfils to capture his first hold as the pair find themselves thrown into the deep end with a tight deuce game. Game point turns into break point and back again, with both men missing easy forehands as they attempt to step into the court. The Frenchie finally gets the hold, but it could have been a disastrous start.

  49. 01:20 - FEDERER 1-0 MONFILS. Federer opens his account with a typical Federer service game. Three rapid first serves out wide bring him to 40-0. He finally misses a first serve, but a harder than usual second delivery wins him a first hold to love.

  50. 00:54 - Hello! Welcome to our live coverage of the final quarterfinal at this year's US Open. We have had a few decent matches, but this one between the irrepressible Roger Federer and the majestic showman Gael Monfils may turn out to be the best of the lot.
